I'm not sure if I understood the details from the article, but there was also a previous mistake where Waltz added Goldberg's number as a contact number for Hughes. This was just iPhone doing its thing and syncing contacts I guess?

That seems unconvincing. Don't most people already have most of their money centrally stored in banks? The topic at hand is merely if when they want to spend that money, if they take it out of the bank in physical form first and then spend or if they use electronic payments. Refusing to move to a cashless society won't prevent people from being locked out of their money except for what they keep under their mattress.

I think Thailand is much more integrated to the West in all sorts of ways. And Myanmar is deep into a civil war and that I assume reduces greatly the number of foreign journalists, foreigners in general, social media access, etc.

I think the best hope for native Linux gaming at this point is that the Steam deck and Proton in general becomes so popular it makes it worth it to consider native Linux too.

Is this stuff only affecting the not for profit web? What are the for profit sites doing? I haven't seen Anubis around the web elsewhere. Are we just going to get more and tighter login walls and send everything into the deep web?

I wonder how long until everyone gets a cryptographic public key and has to sign every HTTP request to not be blocked. Or every site requires login to use. And social media and things like bug reporting all requiring real ID.

Eh, lemmy is a bit of an exception because it is a leftwing split from reddit and reddit has been on very left mood those last years. The most obvious one I was thinking of was Voat, which was shutdown a while ago.

And you can even update your clock info from the GPS signal. So the only dependency is GPS or similar.

But would Iranian missiles even use GPS? Isn't accuracy limited for civilian use for precisely this reason?

"Featuring". Yes Wired that is a technically accurate description.

They could have tried Steam, but I don't think it works as well. Although they did start with the pure freeform one and switched to a managed one the next day.

I think the sort of Discord group being discussed here counts as "in public". You can join interest groups by just clicking a link with an anonymous account. It's out of view of Google, unindexable, hardish to search and to collect organized information from, but it is more public than say, old newspaper archives in microfilm that anyone can look at in a library.

People are going to discord for that because it is convenient as a platform for a variety of reasons, not because they want to hide it from the public imho.
