I collect burgundy .. mainly romanee conti .. and this article rings very true ..

i'm based in London .. and at places like Harrods / Hedonism Wines .. iv seen a bottle of romanee go from around £20k to £15k .. and sometimes £10 12k .. this year ..

At the same time cuban cigars ,, which are also something I collect/smoke .. seem to be going in completely the opposite direction and getting more expensive .. because of Venezuela/oil/embargoes .. so .. for once .. the wine market is giving me the better deal

At the risk of sounding extremely naieve i have a question for the Wall St / quant / HFT folks lurking here ... but how hard would it actually be to brute force the math/algos behind Medallion Fund (or something in that general class) or even some of the average quant funds

I know it’s not just the math but execution, infrastructure, risk management, data, colocation (if ur an HFT) etc ... but LLMs seem like a pretty powerful apparatus for running experiments that .. a few years ago would have required fairly deep multidisplinary skills across coding .. stats .. and math ..

So assuming you have decent intuition for ideas .. how difficult would it actually be to reverseengineer / rediscover some of the underlying stuff?

this sort of reminds me a little of the reaction to Elon/SpaceX in its early days .. when Neil Armstrong and other apollo astronauts went before congress and voiced their concerns about relying on commercial companies for human spaceflight and the dangers etc .. also not trying to sound cynical but hasnt LLM made math more accessable to ppl ..

As a non american, can someone explain the Flock story from a US perspective (ideally a reasonably centrist one)? .. i keep seeing them in the news here on HN .. apparently ~178 results in the past month . and it seems to get a disproportionate amount of front page coverage

curious what the actual use case for a challenge like this is from Jane Streets side .. guess the obvious one is trading even closer to the wire .. being able to reverse engineer .. inspect circuits to uncover flaws or optimisations that shave latency or improve determinism in the trading stack .. but I wonder if there are other less obvious applications ..
