Are you asking why we wouldn’t use 'last_updated' to store when the record was deleted?

One reason is that you might want to know when it was last updated before it was deleted.

I think you can ”upgrade” the tracks to use three rails so you can handle both track widths. Also there are trains with adjustabe axle widths.

Not all art would work but you could definitely find works that could work within the constraints.
