I interact with Assembly everyday and many of those around me do too. So I wouldn’t label it as niche. If there are thousands of people doing something in computing, it ain’t niche. It’s niche when the numbers are much smaller than that.
Judging by the downvotes that other guy got, he wasn’t “absolutely correct!” as you seem to claim.
Stop constantly editing your message.

You’re absolutely right! If a project has less than 1 million active developers it must be old and shite!

Ah yes, the niche that is video, audio, game and systems programming.
When those three to four amateurs still doing those niche things grow up they’ll move on to real programming, like putting together a solid skills.md file.

What on earth are you talking about? Assembly makes sense in desktop computing as well. Have you ever, for example, watched a video? What do you think powers the codecs, JSX?

There are so many comments along the lines of:
"What's the matter, just fork it when it goes bad?"
The problem is that uv in and of itself, whilst a great technical achievement isn't sufficient. Astral run a massive DevOps pipeline that, just to give one example, packages the python distributions.
Those who are saying that forking is an option are clearly not arguing it in good faith.

False equivalency. The maintenance and expertise required to run the codebase you’ve generated still falls flatly on you. When you use a library or a framework it normally is domain experts that do that stuff.

Do you think everyone you speak to online is this misinformed or has these takes?
I’ve read and listened to enough of Linus to know he says this himself. The Linux kernel is nothing without the maintainers, this is easily observable and everyone knows it.
You see the reason you shouldn’t go into detective work is because you’d be terrible at it, not because it’s non-trivial.
