SF startups seem like a fucking nightmare. I live in a second-tier city and there's lots of six-figure, 9-5 software dev roles that are nowhere near as competitive. Consider relocating somewhere with a lower CoL and more sane culture?

There's a few levels going on here:

- technologists and startup wannabes feeling like HN is "underground" because of the stripped down aesthetic and weird tech stack

- out of touch VCs who are successful because of money and connections but want to cosplay as technical

- the end users of the startups, who are fed the enshittified products funded by the VCs and created by the technologists

If the US had stronger regulation of airlines they would require compensation in these circumstances. In the EU you would be covered.

Flying in the US is a hellscape now thanks to deregulation and union-busting.

AFAIK if it's one booking on the same airline or a codeshare they are required to rebook you. If you planned a "connection" which is two single flights with different airlines you don't get any legal protections. This isn't just Delta, no airline will reimburse you for missing a flight you didn't book through them

I think it's a "fuck around and find out" situation like Brexit. People love to stomp their feet and complain, but when some big interest group actually organizes the vote and it happens they'll be caught unawares.

People complain about have/have-not provinces, but Alberta would be in a much worse position as a independent nation. There are benefits to Confederation beyond just shuffling tax dollars around.

BNPL seems primarily like a regulatory arbitrage because of increasing scrutiny of payday loans and limits on credit card interest rates. Do we really think securitization of burrito loans is unlocking new liquidity in the market that Visa and Mastercard couldn't provide?

I organized some grassroots hackathon events 10+ years ago. Turnout was mostly students and die-hard geeks who wanted something to do on the weekend. Even in this small pond we had a local startup sponsor and try to shoe-horn their service into it.

When I attended bigger events with bigger sponsors it felt like 90% marketing to pitch your idea. The actual technical side was never that impressive or interesting.

One community that kicks ass at this are InfoSec people, I've done a lot of terrific volunteer-run CTFs.

I find some startup leaders really struggle with this if they come from a Big Corp environment. If you're a CTO or VP or Director of Engineering for like 20 people, you're actually going to have to decide things. Yes at your previous roles you could follow a flow chart or whatever but here you have to actually take accountability. Watch them tap dance trying to avoid committing to anything.

2019 public-facing Tobi is probably the least insane version. He has gotten worse and more egocentric (and more explicitly right-wing) since then.

Early (pre IPO) Shopify had a pretty toxic internal culture with a lot of drinking and sexual harassment. I was lucky to be there around the post-IPO, pre-pandemic era when there was a bit of structure and the techbros were getting reigned in a bit. Once the pandemic hit I think he just lost his mind.

There's a kind of survivorship bias to people saying "he's very smart". I was in a neglected part of the engineering org far away from his micromanaging. If he had been showing up and complaining about my projects I wouldn't have stayed for years.

Having worked at Shopify, Tobi is 100% a try-hard Elon wannabe. Anil is correct that this is about performing "being a CEO" for the sake of his image among his peers.

My favorite stupid Shopify cult thing is the hiring page having a "skip the line" for "exceptional abilities" which explicitly lists being good at video games as a reason to skip the normal hiring process. The "other" category includes examples like "Olympic athlete".
