I’m sure the general premise around AI-generated code is accurate. That being said, I’ve definitely had interesting moments where e.g. Claude produced code that matched the pre-existing codebase quite nicely, and slowly started building up its memory of how new pieces fit into the codebase in an idiomatic way. Then again, it started to throw in Tailwind-based CSS classes all of a sudden, because it assumed that Tailwind had been set up (it wasn’t).

> IMO the maintenance story is more or less solved if you can keep AI agents refactoring and improving it in a loop.
That’s a weak argument, though, if the future of AI is totally unreliable when it comes to cost and quality. Right now I definitely wouldn’t want to depend on being able to infinitely access AI tools for such an important part of the toolchain.
Aside from that it’s just not attractive to trust a project made by one person.

Did they? Genuine question, because I do wonder if people in some industries in the past were ever anxious about these specific things (especially skill attrition).

That workflow just sounds exhausting to me. Would I always need to consider how much of a blast radius my AI-generated code might have? Sounds like there’s so much extra management going into these micro decisions that it ultimately defeats the purpose of generating code altogether.
I could see value in using it during the prototyping phase, but wouldn’t like to work like you described for a serious project for end users.

There are a lot of points in there that are just generally bad in modern applications – e.g. UI inconsistencies, lack of automation and general configurability (shared ways to handle windows, layouts, keyboard shortcuts, etc.). I think it’s fair to say these things are just hugely lacking in modern operating systems. Linux might come close, but only with lots of tinkering. macOS is clearly lost and degrading now, and Windows was never close to having these qualities.
I don’t know if TUIs will be the answer, but it’s an interesting development!

Sometimes it’s just about using the path of least resistance. I’ve also contributed to Apple Maps’ and Google Maps’ data, even though I’d prefer to exclusively contribute to OSM and other open platforms instead. But, it was just easier to go through a quick form in the (Apple|Google) Maps app, because that’s where I was at that point in time. Maybe the excuse is laziness and/or force of habit?
Edit: I also imagine the reach of the mainstream platforms to be much higher (e.g. Windows vs. Linux or Google Maps user reviews vs. <is there even an alternative?>).

Depends on the kid’s hobby and purpose of the computer. I’ve always known that MacBooks are better for music making (especially driver hassle, audio signal reliability, etc.). Could I afford a MacBook as my first laptop? No. Did I buy a second-hand MacBook as soon as I could afford it, and have been happy with it since? Yes. As a teenager, I would’ve loved to buy a new MacBook for 500/600€.
I’m sure most other applications are less Mac-optimized, though (software development, 3d/graphics editing, gaming, …).

I wouldn’t put too much hope into foldables, at least not because of Apple’s involvement. They also released the Vision Pro. And there’s still the unsolved(?) problem of the screens getting easily scratched/destroyed if they’re not heavily protected and kept clean. (There are some informative teardown videos, e.g. by JerryRigEverything.)

Apple is very anti-consumer, locking devices down, using planned obsolescence, fighting hard against movements for more open and fairer market practices and standards (e.g. switching to the standard USB-C port, allowing third-party app stores, exploiting developers releasing software on their platforms).
