I wonder if anyone that truly does have it has the self reflection or cognisance to admit that they do?

I mean I’ve got guys on my team that actively argue that you can only develop now using AI and no alternative to development without AI is feasible

Improving my focus. Using less AI at work and reading more. Less screen time and more physical things. Spending a lot of time with friends and being outdoors, long distance running and finding more meaning in life

Agreed. Seems like it should be indefinite given they created a multi billion dollar company off the backs of these maintainers dedicating their hard earned timed for free to begin with and then trained models against their code.

IMO this is an insult if anything

I stopped caring about my job a while ago. I’ve become somewhat numb and withdrawn due to a mix of substance abuse, overworking, poor sleep and poor cognition habits due to AI usage.

For those who have gone through this mental exhaustion, what has helped?

Why learn math when a calculator can do it? Why read a book if AI can summarise it? Why walk to the store if someone can deliver it?

There is no free lunch. The trade off is you get short term gains and long term cognitive dementia. You become a useless generalist.

The large companies I’ve worked at (including FAANG) seemed to thrive on kudos via performative actions. Like the majority of the team is doing useless stuff that management thinks is impressive while the couple all stars get the team closer to the goal.

Meanwhile, a lot of managers calendars are purely just 1:1s with devs on the team which clearly has very little value add to the team.

Anyone else notice this? Not sure if there’s a word for it, but it’s somewhat demoralising working with a bunch of corporate office workers cosplaying as engineers

London flats are incredibly expensive and given the job market it is making it really hard to justify buying one.

Does anyone in London own their home/flat? I’m not looking to live outside zone 1/2 as I sacrifice why I moved here to begin with. However, these 850k flats that are just basic as hell are extremely overpriced IMO.

What options in today’s world exist to support critical thinking? I’m at FAANG basically trying to stay afloat as an expat in a foreign country and hate my job. Mostly forced to do AI LLM stuff. Security and quality out the window since management stopped caring about that.

I miss deep thinking and training my brain. Should I pursue a masters in math or something? I have a masters in general CS, but this was 10 years ago.

Backrest has been working well and ran a ton of my backups. The UX was a bit odd at first, but was able to set it up without much pain
