I built a browser extension for a hackathon that enabled crypto payments direct to site owners. "registration" was just sticking a formatted payment address in a DNS TXT record, and if you were at a supported website, the extension would light up, and facilitated payment.
I still think it's a neat idea but I can't be bothered to build a real version

My old gym teacher also taught science because we just couldn't find another teacher, and was genuinely surprised to learn there were forms of matter smaller than atoms.
My health teacher was a "permanent substitute" situation where we just watched movies the whole semester and got A's.
One of my math teachers died and we just...never hired a replacement, so nobody learned anything that semester.
Bonus: my driver's education teacher was arrested for a DUI (but not terminated)
These situations were all in different schools in different US states, so the lack of quality control in admin that you describe definitely resonates.

This is pretty much Van Inwagen's argument in Material Beings -- recommended if you haven't read it!
Copied from wiki:
"Every composite material object is made up of elementary particles, and the only such composite objects are living organisms. A consequence of this view is that everyday objects such as tables, chairs, cars, buildings, and clouds do not exist. While there seem to be such things, this is only because there are elementary particles arranged in specific ways. For example, where it seems that there is a chair, Van Inwagen says that there are only elementary particles arranged chairwise."

There's this FinTech ad on the NYC subway right now. I can't remember the company, but the entire ad is just a picture of a guitar and some text.
Anyway, the guitar is AI generated, and it's really bad. There are 5 strings, which morph into 6 at the headstock. There's a trem bar jammed under the pickguard, somehow. There's a randomly placed blob on the guitar that is supposed to be a knob/button, but clearly is not. The pickups are visually distorted.
It's repulsive. You're trying to sell me on something, why would you put so little effort into your advertising? Why would you not just...take a picture of a real guitar? I so badly want to cover it up.

I often can't even find someone with a key to open the cabinets. At my CVS there's usually just a security guard, who can't open the cabinets. If you need detergent, beer, shampoo, razors, or pretty much anything else you're out of luck.
Lack of availability isn't even my main concern though. In this environment, everyone needs to order everything online. So instead of one truck making a shipment to CVS (I'm oversimplifying), now you have additional delivery vans and ebikes making door to door shipments, each with extra packaging.
edit to clarify my stance in the context of the GP: I strongly dislike ordering things online when there is (or should be) a local alternative, and only use delivery services as a last resort

I don't do much recreational coding now, but there are a couple of recent examples:
- I needed to submit something on a website that had a completely broken frontend (like, scripts were busted). Found an old version on the wayback machine that worked and, fortunately, there were no compatibility issues. This is pretty basic, but I could have set up overrides in dev tools to restore a working version of the "original" site.
- Needed to make a hotel reservation, but the online form was broken (NaN for all number inputs, probably broken validator). Was able to guess the expected format and manually issue these requests, which worked.
I often think about technical literacy. Programmers are in this bubble where we think "oh, I'll just use grep and regex" and we can solve all sorts of problems. But 99% of people don't even know what those things are, much less have the foundation necessary to use these tools effectively. This sucks, because technical literacy does not seem to be growing at a rate that matches our societal dependence on these systems.

The ecosystem sounds no less insane with this answer. I run into "<X> is deprecated, use <Y>" constantly at a dependency level, at a framework level, and at a paradigm level.
Also, what's Vite? The React docs mention Next.js, Remix, or Gatsby. At what point would any of these become deprecated?
To be clear, I'm just complaining, but you could change the OP's question to read as "How in the world can this number of <dependencies/frameworks/paradigms/languages> be considered sane and normal, and most of all, necessary?" and it would still make sense

Probably because these colleges have 5,000 Maries to choose from. The article says Marie is perfect on paper and "checks all the boxes", but that's honestly not very inspiring and I'd guess that applicants/parents are optimizing for the wrong things.
> “She’s happy but often says, ‘Mom, I just wish I hadn’t studied. I would have gotten into the exact same schools.’” And Marie is probably right. Admissions scarcity is concentrated at the top of the rankings list; there are hundreds of four-year colleges that readily admit B and C students.
My experience is that they actually would have gotten into more / better schools
