Can highly recommend the pocketbook.
If you just want to read i think it’s the best option and a fraction of the price of pinenote

I recently was in the market for a new e-reader and steered away from Kobo and Kindle because of their non-free ecosystem.
I don’t know how exactly it would negatively impact me but I didn’t want to find out.
Got a refurbished pocketbook in the end and very happy with it, it reads all imaginable file formats and I can just send books to it via email or cable.

Her books are mostly about genius caring people being held back from their plan of helping humanity into a golden age by more stupid evil people and regulation and so on.

It’s based on a retelling of the story that isn’t as black and white and more based around the idea that technology and progress are good.
I haven’t read it but the premise is quite cool. Of course having Thiel as a fan kinda ruins it but I still wanted to read it sometime.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Last_Ringbearer

That’s a good way to frame it.
It might be different for US Americans themselves and a lot of other countries as well; but for a large part of the west this was/is true

This kind of sums up my sentiment.
All throughout my adult life the US (for all its apparent faults) was to me a shining example of progress and humanity. It was the best large scale implementation of human rights, laws, and democracy. Sure it was far from perfect but “as good as it gets, for now”
Became very disillusioned with that image of the US in the last couple of years.
Maybe it’s always been like that - but the recent cronyism, the blatant openly displayed corruption and complete disregard for all the values it used to champion really destroyed the good image I had of the US.
In years to come they will realise what this loss of image (or “aura” as the kids would say) really means in a very practical and blunt sense.

I think they weigh the benefits and risks but then completely discard the risks, because humans are bad at evaluating risks.
More than a million people die each year on the road but for some reason terrorism and cancer dominate the risk assessment of people.
I bet any money that almost all people aren’t really afraid of entering a death box every day to drive to work.
How could they be; a lifetime of brainwashing doesnt let them asses the risk realistically
