Don't you think that if people preferred it strongly, a competitor would gobble up that opportunity if the model was viable?
Regarding your last point, there's plenty of software offering both options ($$$ lifetime vs $ monthly). I don't have the data but I bet they see a TON more sales for $ monthly.
E.g. Final Cut Pro for macOS is available as a one-time purchase for $299.99. Alternatively, you can subscribe to Apple Creator Studio for $12.99/month or $129/year

Eh nix flakes are a nightmare to configure. Far more verbose than a docker compose. They rely on some caches which keep pre-compiled packages and you better make sure you have the caches with the particular flakes you need set up. Yikes

Hmmm I can’t think of a subscription app that truly doesn’t have a free/upfront/unupgraded alternative - its just that usually they come with quality issues or poor support, so people choose the better, subscription-based, auto-updating ones.

Hmm I share your concern but we do regularly develop new economies? The EU pumped a ton of money into eastern Europe, the west collectively did the same by outsourcing to Asia which is now the largest market for very significant industries.. Latin America and Africa have been abused and hollowed out for centuries but seeing decent growth now, so I'm more optimistic

Asahi is easier to install on Macs than distros for Windows PCs.
You just run a CLI command and follow simple prompts.
On Windows PCs, you have to go buy a flash stick, download a tool for flashing it for your BIOS/UEFI (and maybe learn MBR vs GPT), wait while that happens, maybe learn about partitions and repartition your disk ahead of time, mess with your BIOS to change boot order, hope you don't wipe your data by selecting the wrong partition etc
(the fact that this is still the status quo is crazy. The nerds need to pay more attention to the funnel)

> Why else would MS not support BTRFS/ZFS/Ext or whatever?
You seriously can’t think of another reason? File systems are complex. Maintenance is a huge burden. Getting them wrong is a liability. Reason enough to only support the bare minimum. And then, 99% of their users don’t care about any of those. NTFS is good enough
