I see people saying this story doesn't belong on HN. genuine question, if this story were about a german national would it be considered as political? is palestinian existence inherently more political than other peoples' existence?

I sail and was tired of the tooling around GRIB files. GRIB is the binary format for weather forecasts (what NOAA/GFS publishes). If you want to view one, your options are: install a desktop app like XyGrib or OpenCPN, pay for a service, or wrestle with command-line tools.

I wanted something I could just open in a browser—drop a file, see wind on a map. Couldn't find it, so I built it: griblet.app

It parses the GRIB, extracts wind vectors, and renders them as animated particles over Leaflet. Supports multi-timestep files so you can scrub through the forecast. No signup, nothing stored server-side (files are parsed in memory and discarded). I'm planning to add more layers in addition to visualizing the wind.

Also added a Saildocs request builder because getting GRIB files can be a challenge. Saildocs is a free service for fetching weather via email—useful offshore where your only connectivity is satellite or SSB radio. You email a specially formatted request, it replies with a GRIB attachment that can be uploaded to giblet. The builder just helps you compose that request correctly.

Would appreciate feedback, bug reports, or feature ideas.

Evernote had multiple chances to get back on track. Its decision to rewrite its multiple apps into a single web-based one was one of them. In theory having only one codebase to fix bugs and build new features in makes a ton of sense.

Unfortunately the hard product work of simplifying the feature set and prioritizing server-side tech debt was overlooked. Therefore the new app was weighed down from the beginning because it had to support all these legacy systems.

IMO the best move for Evernote is to rethink the UX and tech architecture from first principals and have existing users opt-in to migrate their data over. It's a tough decision to make but I don't see any meaningful progress being made otherwise.

Most governments barred non-citizens from entering, and none that I know of had restrictions on leaving. I don't think it's a fair comparison.

The mRNA vaccines are genetically engineered, as is a lot of our agriculture. I see your point but that’s why this test was so heavily regulated by the FDA and had to conduct many trails before it was allowed to proceed.

In non-covid times I'm not nearly this precautious and am super lucky to basically never get sick. I'd be careful of drawing any meaningful conclusions based on just anecdotal experiences.
