Same here. That's when I switched my kids' machines to Linux. That was just 2 months back.
And was Windows 11 bug free, no. Was it easier to use, no. Absolutely irritating OS.

>are you not speaking out of jealousy here?
I am not envying your situation at all.
People who are getting hurt are people like you and me. Employers are seeing your comments. They are reading about others who do this. They are losing trust. When they pay you, they expect you to work for them diligently and not just up to a level of KPI. This behavior will make them to force people to come to work. Remote working will be gone. They will start paying less because they expect people to two time anyway. Overall society loses due to loss of trust.
So you gain something, but society as a whole loses.
P.S. Even if my wife is very happy with me, it doesn't mean that I can have another relationship. Either I have an agreed open marriage or I am cheating. A different thing, but I would say similar.

> No they don't know and if they did I would get fired obviously.
This already shows the problem. They assume they are paying for your time exclusively, while you are doing just enough to satisfy them.
The fact you go such lengths to hide the fact that you are three timing them also shows that you know what you are doing is not acceptable.
Most likely you are in breach of the employment contract.
You are also somehow justifying this to yourself. The problem is that such behavior causes loss of trust and makes other 95% of honest peoples' life painful.

It's not only reaction against child marriages. Thr prevailing culture is to marry off girls as early as possible, affecting their higher education. It also causes lower workforce participation among women as at the point of marriage they typically neither have higher education nor they are employed. Then immediately after marriage there is demand for bearing child, after which they no longer have time to look for employment.
Early marriage basically kills job opportunities and subsequently female workforce participation is lower.

I think we are missing another angle of getting the data. Information is also power. Power to influence people (e.g. Cambridge Analytica). So paying will not stop the data collection. Actually I doubt anything will, unless people really push the regulators to do their job.

We don't know how many things in nature work. For example, we don't fully understand our own brain. As long as it can be replicated, we are fine.
In case of AI we have a better chance to understand what it is doing through chain of thought and explainability. Nature never gave us that..

It is more of an attempt to get real world IDs.
Yesterday I was forced to enter phone number for first time for "login verification". I didn't request any 2FA. They also made it clear they would save the number. Alternative was not logging in. Probably a A/B testing attempt.

And for society as a whole, we are getting to a state where corporations have incredibly large amount of money and gradually, hard power too. OSS is kind of small rebellion that we need to sustain so that we don't that tiny bit of freedom we have.
P.S. I think East India Company's history should be a mandatory lesson for everyone on the ability of a single company to take over a subcontinent. At its peak they had their own army, ruthless efficiency due to a largely meritocratic structure, and was successful in taking over multiple kingdoms.

To be frank, I have always thought of "Now I switched to Linux and am happy" to be some kind of meme that appears on every Windows discussion.
Until it happened to me last month. The ads in Windows somehow popped up during important Zoom calls and I couldn't find a way to skip or switch off immediately. In addition to that, my paid version of Minecraft stopped working.
Using Windows home edition has now become rage inducing. I had a lot of patience for incompetence, but the intentional disruption of my work for making a few bucks is really something different.

I have a feeling that people in the West have assumptions about democracy being better for the society based on their own education levels and social advancement. Democracy is better if the general population have cultural affinity towards fairness, equality and respect for other religions. Democracy does not mean fairness, human values or such high moral standards that general people in the West assume. Democracy is just the will of the people. If they are uneducated, racists and supremacists, the elected government would represent that.

We can use them today as general purpose computers, if we make a large effort to do so.
In my Linux and Mac, I dont think twice to quickly write a script to automate some pain-in-the-butt issues. But with my phone, it is pain-in-the-butt to write anything. It becomes not worth the effort.
Moreover, we can argue if technically it is a general purpose computer for whole day long. But that's not the point.
The point is that we are allowing gradually the big organizations to restrict general purpose computing, the internet and other previously free systems. It is happening slowly, where we can still give them the benefit of doubt. We are the frogs in the kettle where we are arguing that the temperature is just one degree more than earlier, so it is not actually boiling. We can keep on arguing about the temperature or step back and see the big picture where it is going.

In this particular type of abuse, the issue arises because humans value hiding reproductive organs. A similar social constraint applies to women's virginity. So if the society was not so focused on hiding reproductive organs, this particular issue would not have arisen. Nobody laughs at naked hands. It is just expected to be bared and if you put on gloves it is because of weather and not usually to hide hands.
