I think this will be a pretty impactful moment for OpenAI. I mainly use ChatGPT and use the free plan, so I expect to start seeing these ads. If they become too annoying, I have no problem moving to Claude/Gemini. Sure I have stuck to ChatGPT, but I wouldn't say that I am too sticky of a customer. I personally think they are doing it sooner than they should (which probably points to internal financial struggles as they seek to go public) and will erode their active users. There is simply too many easy alternatives. It's not like Netflix where if you are annoyed with ads and don't want to pay for a higher tier, you're more stuck. Yes there are other streaming services, but you can't get the same content.

Perhaps the author just likes to write? I've only just recently started blogging more, but I unexpectedly started to really enjoy writing and am hoping to have my posts be more of a "story". Different people have different writing styles. It's not a problem, it's just that you prefer reading posts that are straight to the point.

I'm an Apple guy through and through, but I am in Georgia Techs OMSCS program. For some of the classes, you need to use a VM that doesn't play nicely with Apple Silicon. So I went over to Microcenter and picked up a cheap PC with Windows. I loathe using it, even if I am in the VM the whole time. I'm amazed at the amount of ads that pop up and for a while, sound just didn't work. Like not with headphones or just out of the normal speakers until eventually a random update fixed it. I get not wanting to be in the Apple ecosystem, but at this point in time I don't know why you would want Windows and not go for Linux.

Not OP, but I have heard the comparison used when discussing jobs. There tends to be rhetoric in the US that transitioning away from coal and oil will lead to large job losses, so this is an anecdote disproving it.

My blog. I created it a couple years ago but didn't really know what to do with it. Have started to use it as a way to learn and have enjoyed writing more than I thought I would. Nothing crazy with UI and I am not talking about anything groundbreaking, but it's been fun!

I don't have any advice on self learning, but I have been getting a MS in CS for similar reasons. I also have a stats degree, work full time, and struggle with self learning. For me, being in a structured program makes it easier for me to manage. Certainly not a requirement, but it is the way I learn best. Maybe look for classes you can take at a local university or online and see if anything grabs your attention.

I wonder if doing this would actually be a step closer to learning (from not doing anything at all). To put it in your own style, you are forced to read the output and probably understand the basic concepts of what the LLM provides

I think it's okay if someone missed something in the docs and wanted to share from their experience. In fact, if you look at the the s3 pricing page [0], under Data Transfer, VPC endpoints are mentioned at all. It simply says data transfer is free between AWS services in the same region. I think that much detail would be enough to reasonably assume you didn't have to set up additional items to accomplish.

Agree with your edit saying that there should be a landing message that gives a quick overview. But with in a few moments I was able to see that you can create a database and then start inserting tables/records into it. Seems like a pretty good tool to learn how to create and manage a database without the hassle of having to download sqlite and start testing commands that might be new to you in the CLI

How does self hosting change the power consumption? Don't you still need to power those devices? If you're running fully on renewable, sure you have a point. But if everyone self hosts, the power companies still have to fill the energy gap, right?

These are good examples of why a non-smartphone is valuable and a smartphone is not necessary. Also the linked article states that they will be allowed to use their phone when given circumstances require, which I think covers the cases you outlined

While you haven't used linear algebra, someone working in MLE would probably find it useful to understand. Now I'm not saying you need to take a linear algebra class to understand matrix/vector operations, but it would be useful as it comes up.

At my work, we self-host some models and have found that for anything remotely similar to RAG or use cases that are very specific, the quantized models have proven to be more than sufficient. This helps us keep them running on smaller infra and generally lower costs
