it’s all part of the experience lol. I’d imagine I’d stop finding these quirks amusing pretty quickly if I actually lived there and got over the honeymoon phase. Also the self affirmation messages they play on the buses were kinda surreal the first time I heard them after a long night on bourbon street

I just moved to Seattle after being in New Orleans for about a month and I already miss nola. There’s really nothing else like it in America. I’m especially missing the cheap public transit and good dive bars, Seattle is lacking with both of those things

I’d imagine mostly due to a lack of incentive on microsoft’s part. Like minecraft is literally the biggest video game to ever exist with, making 2 entirely separate code bases work while keeping all the features the same and preserving compatibility with over a decades worth of mods just so the mostly separate java and bedrock communities can play with each other is just not worth the risk. So many people play minecraft in so many different ways means that making even minor changes in gameplay can be huge sources of controversy, let alone major infrastructure changes.

There was a pretty great article a few years ago about the downfall of 23andMe (I think it was in The Atlantic), but basically they ran through all of their potential customers within a few years. It turns out that when your entire business is sequencing someone’s dna it’s hard to get repeat customers. They tried to pivot to a subscription model where they would give health advice based on your genetic sequence, but it turns out that most health information you can glean from a dna is suspect at best and next to useless most of the time.

My experience with a prius in the north east was that it wasn't particularly bad in ice and snow and the few times I got caught in snowstorms it handled about as well as any front wheel drive car. I certainly wouldn't go out into a snowstorm with it if I had the choice, but thats true of almost any non-awd drive. The windshield defrosting situation was also a non issue for me.
Man I miss my prius, I sold it when gas was under $2...

It's kind of funny how far back this whinging about kids not being able to use computers goes, especially how condescending this blog is. Most people will only learn as much about computers to do their work and nothing more, because isn't it normal to only learn the bare minimum about something you don't care about?

The main argument against capital punishment isn't even that mistakes are made. Capital punishment is more expensive and less effective as a deterrent for crime compared to life imprisonment.
The argument for MAID is more about terminally ill people being able to prevent excessive suffering. Also consent is a major difference between MAID and capital punishment

It does show how out of touch tech workers are that they are shocked someone is able to live off 1k a month. It sometimes feels like hn posters were born on college campuses and shielded from normal society until their twenties, after which they move to the Bay Area with the upmost confidence that they know everything there is to know about the world.
Especially if you are doing it voluntarily, 1k a month can provide you more then enough for a comfortable life in many part of the country. More so if you can avoid car ownership/insurance and health insurance (Which gwern seems to do).

Making using a car more expensive doesn't disincentivize car ownership or usage when there is no other alternative. Like you can't rely on public transportation, biking, or ride shares to get to your job in most parts of this country. The rising costs of the past few years haven't reduced personal car usage as much as its made the lives of people near the bottom of the income scale much more stressful and expensive.

This is cool and the formatting is spot on with real nutrition labels. It’s doesn’t scan all that well though, it’s not immediately apparent that this is a listing of tracks and not albums or artists. Replacing m with mins would really help, and maybe replace the serving size with number of tracks like “Serving Size: 10 Songs”. If someone is sharing this on social media to their friends their spotify handle is probably like the 5th most relavent piece of info. Also the whole track popularity is pretty confusing, especially with how many numbers are dedicated to it.
You got all the hard problems for this project done already, and with a little tweaking it could be really cool and shareable

The difference is showing my id to a minimum wage liquor store worker for a few seconds vs giving my id to a company and trusting them to store it indefinatly and tying my internet presence to my actual identify all for a law that would be at best a minor hinderance for underaged people wanting to access pornography

Thats definitely what's happening, at least with music. When radio was dominant, the "hot 100" lists were pretty diverse because everyone was exposed to the same set of ~70-150 hit songs every year, that were curated by record companies and radio stations. This system let weirder or more ambitious music occasionally trickle to the top. Without everyone listening to the same programming, the only artists that can be the most popular are the most widely appealing musicians.
