the way i see, LLM's in their current shape are neither good enough to replace software engineers but they have become a necessary part of everyone tool kit. ergo, actual companies themselves aren't getting much benefit because their competitors are using the same tools and they can't fire their human labor either just it's just an extra cost. At my org, i see good engineers use LLM's in wise ways and bad engineers just let it write slop for them. What gets to me is the verbosity and noise though, i consider brevity, and curation to be hallmarks of intelligence but most people at work just spit out so many words in their design docs or code comment these days.

I never studied hard in high school, had one AP, went to a mid tier university and got mostly C's and i also have a household income in the top 1%, a gratifying job and a loving family. I did what i wanted most of my life - i would rather program stuff than apply myself in school and that yielded rewards. I think the broader point is if someone's child wanted to apply themselves to be excellent, then i think that is quite alright but we start getting into trouble when parents are forcing their children or scaring them with "if you don't do this, your life is over" type advice.

i quit watching short form videos recently and my attention has come back - like i can actually read books and watch long videos and just let my mind think for much longer. It's incredibly damaging what algorithmic feeds are doing to people's minds.

i use claude a lot and i find that it is best applied in domains in which i am already a master. I tried applying it to domain's im unfamiliar with and i found that i produced stuff but as time went on i understood what i produced less and i almost felt like i do after binge watching a netflix show, 2 weeks later i barely remember any of the details. I wonder how much you need to "do" to learn and remember. LLM's give you a shortcut to doing and so you probably aren't learning either. It's like when you watch a professor write a proof and it makes sense while listening to the professor but at home you have difficulty deriving it. LLM's give me the same sort of feeling. I think the way forward is still going to be doing things manually to learn and using LLM's once you've mastered an area and people who don't understand this fact are going to slowly descend down a hill and forget how to depend on their own thinking.
