I quit my FAANG job yesterday to join a fully remote company. I took a >50% pay cut but I think it is a 100% life saver. I remember spending 3-4 hours/day commuting and I am just not willing to do that any more. I've cut back on expenses and simplified my life, built up some savings so I can make do with less. My retirement savings will slow down dramatically, but if I don't hate my work life then those savings will be less of an all-consuming goal.
Thank you senior leadership for your wisdom, "If you don't like it, find another place to work". The first good advice I've heard from them in 5 years.

Enterprises are moving more and more workloads to cloud, and they tend to have 70-80% Windows OSes on their virtual server workloads. With Microsoft's licensing constraints it is a very real barrier to them choosing any cloud except Azure, and this is a multi-trillion dollar market space, larger than the current hyperscalers combined.

You can have training repayment and non-disclosure clauses in contracts, leaving cost recovery and legal remedies for employers.
Takee your investment industry example - a non-compete could prevent you from taking a lucrative position in a competitor of your current employer, doing completely unrelated work like writing software for their settlement system. I would rather have the freedom to choose where I work.

Sure, you can't remove all risk, but you can reduce it and reduce the risk of unexpected firefighting work. You can implement rolling or blue/green deployments that roll-back on failure. The key is being able to identify failures, which means having meaningful canaries to identify issues. Those canaries can also improve your operational awareness so they aren't just a deployment investment.
If you don't deploy on Friday then you lose 20% of your deploy opportunity. If you only deploy once or twice a week, then sure - choose Monday/Wednesday or something, but if you deploy more frequently then improve your deployment safety.

Because as part of the VC investment, they are also taking positions on the board of your company. Maybe enough of a position that they can oust you if you don't do as they "suggest". Also, one round of funding is rarely the end of it, and if you are demonstrating that you are not playing their game and trying to become a Unicorn, then you will not get a second round of funding.
Why do you think VC control is bullshit?

Totally agree. I can't make more time, and I zealously protect my personal time. I want more of it.
I stopped doing side jobs years ago, when I realized that the money wasn't enough to get my mind in that groove, let alone go somewhere and do something for someone. Now I'm getting to the point where I question if my FAANG salary is enough to justify 40 hours/week.

i have seen a lot of people with physical challenges and disabilities discussing how critical these devices have become. they may not solve mainstream problems, but they have contributed materially to the quality of life for a marginalized community, and i hate the idea that they will disappear because big tech hasn't found a way to monetize them. i hope that the remnants of these projects can be open-sourced or sold to companies that will run with them and build and maintain products to support those who may have mobility or physical manipulation challenges, that are benefiting from voice control.

"Breakfast is the most important meal of the day" was created by a marketing campaign for Grape Nuts. Doing research into it seems like a very good idea, rather than just trusting "intuition", especially if it may just be an echo of that marketing message and not biological evidence.
https://bettermarketing.pub/how-marketing-created-the-most-i...
Nutrition research is hard, mostly reliant on self-reported or animal studies, and the quality has been low. I am happy to have more repeatable and ethical research done to help better understand what really drives our biological systems.
