Interestingly IPCs are also used to verify new chipsets in embedded companies. Run the same code with newer generation chipset and see if IPC is better than the previous. IPCs are one of the main criteria if the new chipset is a hit or miss (others are power..)

I said most Indians are recent immigrants (not all). I cared about most Indians because when you are speaking about median income it is the most that matters not outliers. How is the Bhagat Singh case is anyway related to when you are speaking about median income?
I did not say more degrees makes you smarter but there is a direct correlation between education and income. That was the point being discussed

thank you cscurmudgeon. Only you seem to get it. I included Jews to prove that being model minority is quite complex and not all minorities can be compared. I think most missed the point and went into genetics which i don't believe in. I was expecting people to understand that if your parents are educated, you are more likely to be educated which proves to be the case for Jews and Indians in US.

It is not a miracle. Indians immigrating to US are more educated than the general US population [1] (40.6% have graduate degree, 32.3% have bachelor's).
Have you also thought about why Indian American kids win spelling bee's or Jews win Nobel Prize disproportionately when compared to their population?
Comparing Indians or Asians to blacks is not fair. They are mostly recent immigrants (except few brought in as labourers) and did not have to suffer through the horrors of slavery which left blacks with broken family structure and other things (It is complex, like housing seggregation where the black neighbourhoods did not increase in wealth when compared to white neighbourhoods, criminal justice system)
[1] http://www.pewresearch.org/fact-tank/2014/09/30/5-facts-abou...

As an immigrant who lived in south(NC), midwest(Colorado) & west(CA), each of the regions are very unique. In south most people greet you & nod at strangers while walking on streets. I got used to this habit & in midwest/west when i nod, many times it will be met with blank stares. Some of my friends who nodded out of practice in India got into hilarious situations where people became suspicious. Overall my impression is Americans of all ages/sex are very outgoing (except for young women who probably are afraid of getting unwanted attention) when compared to people in Europe/India/China.

Carriers want diversity so that they can do better bargaining with the phone makers. ex: My HTC M7 phone came with lots of preloaded shitty apps made by AT&T which i can't delete, Apple will not allow AT&T to twist their arm like that. Similarly they want diversity in the chip makers as well. If the phones are subsidised most people will go with iPhone.

Indian banks have their own problems. I have spent lots of time dealing with Indian banks which want me to show up in person to handle certain account issues while i was in US. Security works more by obscurity where you have to provide lots of details, which can be bad if you don't regularly use the accounts.
Customer service depends on situation. When i deal with private banks, i will be treated really well (with offer for tea/cold drinks/snacks :) & personal attention from manager. My dad, who deals with public sector banks in rural area tells me that he dreads to go near banks. The managers apparently are super rude, with a condescending attitude towards rural people.

I understand that US justice system is completely biased against minorities (Mainly blacks) but i can't completely come to terms with total abolition of death penalty as expressed by many here on HN. Here are few incidents where i think death penalty can be justified (examples are from Norway which has abolished death penalty & India where it is very rarely carried out - only 5 from 1995)
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2011_Norway_attacks
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_Delhi_gang_rape
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ajmal_Kasab
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Masood_Azhar (Got released after a hijacking and founded JeM)

H1B system is broken. It is especially hard if you are from India or China. Although you can change employers, you need to restart the green card process from scratch which introduces lots of uncertainties. Obama wanted to allow H1Bs to change employers easily by giving them better portability but USCIS came up with a bad rule which i believe is due to lobbying by employers. Australia & Canada have better immigration systems where they give PR quickly.
It is bad for US as well. Immigrants are generally more risk taking than citizens & H1B does not allow them to take risks when they are young because they will be waiting in the line for PR (Green Card). By the time they get green card it will be decade or more and their risk appetite would have reduced due to having family/children.
In general, I don't believe most of the high salaries in tech may not be sustainable. Lots of tech jobs will move to India & China (or any low cost country in future which has a good pool of educated people), that is just capital chasing good enough talent which is cheap. Moving up the value chain is the only option.

> India has a long history of reneging on deals. Once a deal is struck with most nations, that's it. Done deal. With India, they don't care - they'll do whatever is convenient for them.
Most nations will do whatever is convenient for them. ex: If you are from US, GOP says they will cancel the Iran nuclear deal
> Hell, even Russia and China won't back out of deals once struck. They'll piss and moan if it turns out they got the short end of the stick, but they'll still honor the deal.
Not tue, ex: Hong Kong democracy
> I tell my clients to steer clear of India for this very reason - it's nearly impossible to know when a deal is "solid".
You just described all the other countries apart from developed countries where there are no severe penalties for walking out of a deal
> My issue is that India will play unfair. They have a history of it.
Every country does it. ex: Union carbide CEO lived happily in US till he died
> That's not good for India. Investors will (and are) balking at the idea of entering the Indian market because who knows when India will pull the rug out from under them when the mood strikes.
Investors know the risks, Equity Risk Premiums are higher for India (& other developing countries). If investors don't invest in India or China due to inherent risks then they might loose out in the long run given that the future returns from developed world will not be great

I am weary of the gatekeepers, they can change the rules when they want. What would really help from a long term perspective is to provide very low cost data plans, this might not happen if we go the free basics route since telcos have vested interest in keeping the free basics forever by jacking up the cost of data plans.

Coming from a rural farming community in India i think this is a very bad deal. I speak with my folks when i visit India about how they use technology. The use cases are very practical such as turning off/on the pumpset, since the fields are far and the power comes and goes at different times, this kind of app is amazing. I can think of similar use cases once IoT takes off. ex: Checking the water levels in paddy fields (The crabs make holes and if you are out of luck all the water is gone, resulting in midnight trips to fields to make sure everything is fine). The startups which might provide these kind of services will do well only if the internet is free, else FB will build its own apps to do this. FB will have a monopoly over the future use cases. The last thing my folks back home need is to play farmville or poke at each other or put booty shots in instagram :)
