I also remember when CNN first appeared. I was a kid, but I recall people (adults, Boomers) sort of rejected it at first. I think there was a trust issue, not just with CNN, but cable-TV in general. But yeah, I recall people thinking CNN was a passing fad, like it would fail in a year or so because people liked/trusted the local broadcasters and network anchors they'd known for most of their lives.

I had a friend years ago that was truly amazing at interacting with people. She could, and did, talk to anyone - a rich guy with a $20K watch or a homeless guy; it didn't matter to her. And, the thing that really stuck with me is she always left the people that she interacted with feeling better. Always. I have numerous memories of her conversing with people and watching their expressions or body language completely change in a matter of minutes.
Anyway, that's the part I've tried to focus on - making at least one person I interact with everyday feel better. It doesn't have to be a major, life-changing interaction, just inject a tiny bit of positivity into someone's life. The main thing I realized was that I had to surrender the fear of being perceived as cheesy, corny, fake or manipulative. I think it's gone well; I hope I've made others feel better, if only for a moment. But honestly, I think it's helped me the most.

This situation is real. I've had the same doctor my entire adult life (~25 years). We've got a pretty informal relationship. I even saw her hammered at a bar one night, and had to give her a ride home because her friends were also drunk AF. Anyway, a few years ago, during an annual checkup, she asked how my family was doing and I made a joke about my brother drinking too much. A few weeks later I started receiving pamphlets in the mail about treating alcoholism, ads for rehab centers. I just brushed it off, didn't make any connection. Then, the next year, during my annual checkup, my doctor wasn't available, so I got a different doctor, someone I'd never talked to in my life. She immediately started asking me about my drinking. I fired back, asking WTF she was talking about. She said, "Oh, well your file says alcoholism runs in your family.", and then started lecturing me about getting over the shame of alcoholism is the first step to beating it. I don't even drink. No one in my family drinks other than my brother. He was drinking a lot at that time because he favorite NFL team (LA Rams) was doing really well, and he was celebrating a lot. And it was just a joke.
The next year, during my annual checkup, I gave my doctor a load of crap, telling her to record nothing I say unless I explicitly tell her to. She tried to defend the system, but she agreed. I'm still upset that my "file" still mentions alcoholism.

Unsurprisingly, Trump is downplaying the situation, comparing it to Pete Rose betting on his own team.
I've always wished for something similar: autonomous car racing. No human drivers. No remote controls. Just program the cars before the race, and let them go. Maybe even load the cars with mild explosives so they go BOOM when they crash.

I visited with my family in rural Missouri recently. Alex Jones and InfoWars is gospel to them. I was amazed at how many times cited him as an authority on various topics. I thought they were joking, but apparently, Obama made a promise with his father before his passing that he would destroy the United States. Oh, and of course, Obama is Satan, and Trump was sent by God to protect us all. Of course.

One of the "lies" that concerns me is AI-generated music and its deterioration of the personal connection between musician and listener. As MCA from the Beastie Boys said, "If you can feel what I feel then it's a musical masterpiece." The listener feels a connection to the musician (and other people) with sad songs because everyone has felt sad, or with love songs because everyone has fallen in love, and so on. The listener can still get a feeling from AI-gen'ed music, but is it the same? What is the connection? Or, has that "connection" between musician and listener always been bullshit? That is, has it always been just about music triggering your brain to make you feel a certain way, and the source of that feeling really isn't what people care about - just give me a feeling?
