As a programmer, it's always a few months of work before the client stops spending on development. At that point, I can go up to 3 months without work, which means high anxiety because if I wasn't able to save much, I have to scurry around trying to find work. Sometimes I get a referral or two but it'd be nice to have about the same stability as being employed.
How do you programmers here manage to land a constant amount of work while freelancing?

I'll add to that since this is Hacker News:
If you're building a SaaS, don't use a front-end framework and tools like Tailwindcss. Instead, use a full-stack framework like Django or Rails and build your UI with Bootstrap.
A lot of SaaS founders underestimate the importance of time to market. I worked on 2 projects where the founders wanted their apps built using the latest and greatest tech stack loved by silicon valley startups. Turns out, using the same tech stack as VC funded companies costs a fortune in terms of both time and money, so, you end up not shipping fast enough or not at all.

Yes because it makes it easy to build good looking UIs.
You can move on to something like Tailwind but then your html will look messed up. You'll also have to pay for the Tailwind UI component library if you want to build faster. That's something you get for free with Bootstrap.
I don't see why anyone would stop using Bootstrap anytime soon.

I recently migrated a client's app to a $10 VPS. Before that, the app was running on AWS with a couple EC2 instances, RDS, and lambda costing about $300/month.
The client was skeptical and asked about whether it's gonna be stable and scalable.
3 months later, the app is running buttery smooth.

SEEKING WORK - Remote
Hello, I'm Josh.
Just recently, I helped my client launch https://folderr.com after he got burned by an incompetent team.
The app is full-stack Django, React, including Ionic/Capacitor mobile apps. I worked on all these technologies including deployment to AWS, Apple Store, and Google Play.
In summary, I'm a true full-stack developer so you no longer have to juggle between different contractors to get features out. Once you hire me, you'll be able to launch your product in no time.
Here's what my client has to say:
"As someone who has spent 15 years in the software industry, both as a product director and as the founder of multiple software companies (one scaling to more than 250k users), I can attest that it is not easy to find a full-stack developer who possesses both exceptional technical skills and strong communication and trustworthiness. But in Josh, I have found such a candidate. He has not only demonstrated a deep understanding of technologies such as Python, React, AWS, and Ionic, but he has also consistently shown himself to be an effective communicator and a trustworthy team member. Josh is a self-starter who is able to quickly understand product and feature requirements and instantly resolve complex issues, something my previous development agency in India was not able to do. I could go on and on about the problems I've faced with other developers around the world, but I'll just sum it up by saying that Josh is one of the best developers I've ever worked with. It is without hesitation that I would recommend Josh to any organization."
Love,
Tim"
Let's start by discussing your project over a quick video call. Fill in the contact form on my website and I will reach back: https://joshkaramuth.com/contact/

If you really want the best stack that will impress all your engineer friends then use the following:
1. Rust backend that communicates with another Go based API. Use Rust for the performance critical parts and Go for the rest.
2. Use Python to build a machine learning model of some sort for your app.
3. Build your marketing website using JAMSTACK. Use a NextJS frontend, an Express API for rendering server state. Deploy the whole thing on Kubernetes. Make sure to automate everything using CI/CD so that deployment can be done using a single command or click.
4. Build your app frontend using a mixture of SvelteKIT and server side templates. Use Svelte to provide fluid user experience and server pages for simplicity. You can also mix in React and Vue if you like. Depends on how impressed you want your friends to be.
5. Also make sure to use multiple different databases. Use PostgreSQL for relational data, MongoDB for tree like structures, and also try some SQLite for simple stuff. If your friends read HN then they're gonna be really impressed by your use of SQLite.
That should set your up, don't try to over-complicate things. With a bit of luck, you'll be able to ship real software in less than 5 years.

Sometimes I get clients who don't know how development works and end up getting angry when I charge them more than expected hours.
For example, they ask me to add a feature to their app but then I take 10 hours to install their project on my computer because the previous developer added package-lock.json to .gitignore. Then I take a couple more hours getting through the spaghetti code so that I can actually figure out how to add the feature.
Have you experienced this before? If yes then how can you communicate with the client that you're not trying to scam them?

Dunno what you mean by getting it right tbh.
for i in range(10)
The statement literally declares or sets a variable named i in that scope. When the loop exits, i still exists in the scope with the value 9. If you call a function that was given a reference to i, the value will be 9 as expected because the function was called after the loop exited.
Don't see any quirk or mistake here.

I think we would be much better off using traditional html, bootstrap scss, and some jquery for interactions. But nobody likes to be boring so React it is.
React itself isn't really the problem because there are some valid use cases for it. However, it's currently being thrown at every web development problem even when there are better and more stable solutions.
But if I had to use React today, I'd stay away from MUI for sure since they constantly demonstrated a lack of maturity.

Technically, it makes sense for Python to work like this because your functions are being bound to a variable i which is located in the global scope.
I wouldn't call this a design mistake but more of a misunderstanding of how scope works.
