I prefer searching too, but sometimes it's nice to just "put TV on." I do this now with Amazon Prime Video, which has a "Live" feature that mimics a guide akin to Channel Surfer. Also my dad (age 85) struggles with Youtube on our TV because of the decision paralysis.

“Yet as Google does the Googling, humans no longer visit the websites from which the information is gleaned. ”
Can you blame them? These publishers’ content is buried under paywalls, logins, screen-engulfing ads, deceptive headlines, the list goes on forever. Publishers created such user-hostile experiences that people are desperate for a user interface that’s barely there and gives them what they want, and will gladly pay $20 per month for it.

I send an email to my manager every week with two headings: “This week” and “Next week.” 3-5 concise bullet points under each heading, no sub-bullets. I avoid bullets like “Met with Sal about XYZ” or other wheel-spinning stuff that doesn’t translate to a performance review or interview. I include links liberally. Every manager has loved these emails, and they’re really handy for performance reviews, interviews, or even as a paper trail.

Same. My current job resulted from: seeing a hiring manager post about the role, applying at the link she shared in her post, and spending 2 hours crafting a DM to her. Interviewed and got the job, and knew nobody at the company.

Thanks for this list. In 2014, I switched to a vegan diet with a heavy emphasis on restricted oil consumption too, and the weight peeled off. I originally did it for dietary/health reasons, but over the years I've developed more of an ear for the ethical reasons too. I never have felt like I'm not getting enough protein, but occasionally when conversations like this come up, it's nice to know what's out there. I'd never heard of TVP.

Quora also comingles ads with content, and the ads look almost identical to content. Quora has become unpleasant and unusable in the past decade, and I only end up there on accident.
I just logged in out of curiosity, and I have an avalanche of “notifications” that are just pathetic — “Dark Psychology Facts posted in a space you might like: ‘Can a human win in a battle with a hyena?’”

It was Anker or Bose — just now I searched “Bose noise-cancelling headphones,” and on the results screen there’s first a carousel of a bunch of JBL headphones, followed by two results that are some brands called Raycon and Tozo.
If I squint I can sort of understand sponsored products on actual product-detail pages or on the homepage, but in search on a shopping site it feels really user-hostile — you’re searching because you’re looking for something specific, not browsing.

This is definitely the worst thing about Amazon. I pay them $120/year or whatever, and I search a specific product by a specific brand, and the entire browser screen shows me brands and even products I didn't even search for. I should not get ads in a store that I pay to use, especially in search.
