both can be true:

-the US gov't is stupid and overly aggressive and absurd

-Anthropic for reasons no one can quite conceive keeps describing every product release of theirs as an imminent threat to civilization (and simultaneously keeps pushing the market forward as fast as they possibly can).

I'm sympathetic with this sentiment but surely it's pretty rare the law actually gets involved? Our kids play outside a lot and no cops have ever raised an eyebrow (except for at our crazy drunk of a neighbor, where eyebrow raising is appropriate).

I started going in 2002 and have friends who have gone every year since then.

There has been a meme that burning man sucks now and used to be better that entire time.

That doesn't mean the meme is false. It definitely has changed. There's an article in sfgate today that quotes the head of the Death Guild (Thunderdome) camp as saying something like, do people want to carry on the traditions their parents had, or invent their own?

I thought that was a great question. Both are valid paths.

Hmm. I have a decent shed outside my house and my current office (in the house) is decent but when kids get home it gets a bit harder.

A lot of good stuff in this thread. The party I'll add and haven't seen yet is that I think being a dad has made me a better people manager at work. I think about humans more than ever and that has helped make me more efficient at work

I guess thinking from first principles probably the ideal is neither government mandating days off nor their behind terribly hard to come by.

Better imo would be - if I personally accomplished something meaningful and valuable and 'earned' time, then I am strongly incentivized to take time. Also it taking time will help my health and wellness meaningfully then I should also be incentivized to do so.

But that seems impossible to setup if we aren't all our own business owning entrepreneurs.

Toolbox minefield made me laugh.

I guess I'm in the .001%: my father in law built homes for a living and built his own home and every piece of furniture in it himself. Everything lasts longer and works better than in professionally built homes in my experience. He's a real marvel.

I suspect there may not many more people with his skillset after his generation passes.

how about: -if we really don't like targeted advertising, just outlaw it -then let websites do whatever they want with our cookies so long as they aren't targeted advertising

instead of building websites and writing laws over the span of decades that just seem to want to ban targeted advertising but don't actually do it. FFS.

Good idea! I'd never heard that. Very interesting.

But wouldn't this help china build models just as good as ours immediately? Wouldn't it make the investment in training a model worth a lot less?
