<p>What are you even talking about?<p>There are more articles in the HN feed on AI than any other topic, by far.<p>A certain amount of the push back is just because of how much it displaces all other subjects.<p>Another amount is just trying to overcome explicit fan-boi-ism. A year and a half ago, I was a total skeptic. The tech has evolved considerably since then. Now I find it has very strong results in some applications. But there are still certain demographics who want to believe its great at everything, which is just not true.</p>

<p>A nice article! It really does a great job of describing the hostage nature of keeping the various daimyo in check.<p>One thing that I think is commonly misstated though, is that this period was one of "peace".<p>When viewed from the elite perspective, the power struggles between daimyo in the Warring States Era had subsided, but for the common people, the Edo Period was anything but peaceful.<p>The samurai class could chop up any commoner at any time, for any reason, or no reason. Sometimes just to "test" a new sword, or because their "honor" had been challenged (maybe the person didn't get out of the way and bow fast enough).</p>

<p>After studying Japanese language and culture for the last 15 years, and spending about 6 months there in total, I would say they have a massive over-packaging problem in general.<p>I've never seen a place throw away more plastics than in Japan.<p>If the current oil situation forces a reworking of this system, I'd say all in all, that's an upside.</p>
