I once asked on #ffmpeg@libera if the GPU could be used to encode h264, and apparently yes, but it's not really worth it compared to CPU.

I don't know much about video compression, does that mean that a codec like h264 is not parallelizable?

I got a thin raincoat, a thing I can roll and pack in my bag, I have been carrying it around for the last 10 years or so.

I think it was advertised as very water proof, like water would pearl on it.

It's probably full of PFAS, no idea if it has been leeching PFAS, but I know it's not very waterproof anymore, so that might be a worrying clue.

Bourdieu was ahead of his time.

People now identify themselves as belonging to a social class by subtle cues, it's like an unconscious messaging system to signal that you belong to some sort of club.

That's what "being raised right" means now.

It's now backwards to check if someone comes from a good or rich, noble family.

Instead, we check other subtle things.

Spend 5 min with anybody, and you can somehow know if that person can belong to your group of friends.

It's like animal checking each other' scents to accept them in a group.

People constantly tell me "oh you're a dev it's easy to find work"

I'm a c++ dev, with excellent senior tests, but low experience, and no degree in France. 3 years without a job.

I yearn for a new pandemic.

Fortunately, I learned how to live without a job, found other things to do and how to live a life. Welfare is generous, and I have good savings.

Honestly I don't really want to work in software anymore. If there is a job offer and recruiters are calling me, I answer and I accept.

But I'm not applying to all positions I can see and I won't run after them.

Nothing will change until developed rich countries are starting to hurt.

And I don't think it's going to hurt enough in 10 or 20 years.

The pain will come slowly, people won't see it.

It's like going back to the middle age so slowly, that the population don't realize or feel it.

And honestly, wars and trump are making climate concerns so difficult to think about.
