The fact that a package manager which keeps separate versions of each package for each dependency that it has became the accepted default that everyone in the frontend community uses as a foundation for their projects speaks to a lack of care or understanding within that community for technical matters.

Attackers go where the victims are. Frontend is a monoculture with the vast majority using NPM; backend, less so. This isn't an excuse for NPM, but another strike against it.

You could also argue that the attacks make a deeper point about frontend vs backend devs, but I won't go there.

Simplicity of deployment. No need to compile. People bitch about virtualenvs but they pretty much just work.

Also, totally FOSS. Unparalleled library ecosystem (no, I don't buy into the hype about re-rolling all your own dependencies).

Beyond that, Go is kind of nice, but the lack of a inheritance is stifling. Python has everything that's needed and very little that's not.

Edit: Getting downvoted, probably because of the comment about virtualenvs. What's your alternative? .NET DLL's? The joke that is NPM? Go probably does this better, admittedly, but Python is practically one of the best out there.

And yet, it's still the place to go to buy anything secondhand or used. I'd go so far as to say eBay could be nationalized under the Defense Production Act due to the critical role it plays in manufacturing by keeping obsolete manufacturing machines running.

Indeed. I'm sure that someone will butt in with "it's just a bad implementation!" but the whole bit about allowlisting communications will cause flashbacks in those of us who had all our PUT requests just quit working on an IIS server.
