Twenty years ago, for a brand new web framework written from scratch, and by then they had already fixed it.

Every web framework was trash at the time. And the alternative was custom PHP code probably ridden of SQL injections.

I used TurboGears and restarting your web server with a cron job was a pretty common suggestion to "handle" memory leaks.

If the poster stopped acting like an emo teen from the 90s (“Clownflare”, really?), he would be aware of the why of the late Linux usage spike, but maybe he wouldn’t like it (it is mostly because of “Omarchy”)

My reasons to switch to Linux from Windows were very little about "security" and plenty more about freedom. Sure, it was very nice avoiding running an antivirus, but that was just the cherry on top.

I wanted the freedom to change and "rice" my desktop however I wanted, and the Compiz cube looked awesome. I found Windows condescending and restricting in that regard. Yes, my first reason was the aesthetics, kick me out of the nerds club. (That was also the reason I switched to Mac for 10 years).

My second reason was that I suspected I could learn so much more about computers using Linux full time. And I did.

I was also younger and used to associate Windows with soul-sucking corporate jobs and Linux with new ideas and experimentation. It was us-vs-them. Open Source vs Micro$oft and all that vibe.

It's completely naive. To say "we need to be better," you first have to define who "we" are and, by extension, *who isn't*.

Drawing that line is what constitutes a community in the first place. It's the entire reason the EU was created: to define a "we".

The idealistic no-borders vision is only achievable by expanding the nation-state until it covers the whole planet. And probably will only happen when it find outsiders to define itself against, Mars, aliens, whatever ends up counting as "not us."

I also always block traffic from China, India, Pakistan, and Russia, after observing that 90%+ of the spam/scanning was coming from those countries.

At least for China, I imagine most of the real humans might use a VPN anyway
