People also stupidly watch soccer games such as World Cup, go on meaningless vacations, eat out when they can cook at home, argue nonsense on online forums such as HN. Sure those activities aren't "encouraging more consumerism and more CO2 output"?

If not this again, what would be your ideas of the path forward for aviation?
All of the constraints you mentioned are the results of decades of optimization around the tube-shape aircraft design. Meaning the design has to be proven first. Infrastructure will adapt.
Also, I suspect the first application will be military, such as Next Generation Air-refueling System (NGAS):
https://www.twz.com/air-force-says-it-needs-more-survivable-...

Do you know how many F16s the US has? They essentially modify aircrafts near the end of their life cycle, adding automate kits. Such a jet is less expensive than new drone and can do more -- fly higher, faster, more complex profiles. They also rarely fly compared to other aircrafts in active duties, manned or unmanned.
This article describes similar modification:
https://www.tyndall.af.mil/News/Features/Display/Article/276...

Do you have the same objection if it for a housing project, built by a private corp?
That's a practice that exists everywhere. This is an article about a case of expropriation in the Netherlands. The government frequently uses expropriation ("onteigening") to forcibly remove old, small wind turbines owned by private farmers to make room for massive, industrial-scale wind farms. In Dutch, so you'll need to swith on English translation:
https://www.dirkzwager.nl/kennis/artikelen/afdeling-bestuurs...

If they pay enough, why not? What is public use infrastructure in your opinion? Any difference than building more houses (like a dense apartment complex) and extend the grid there? That's still private corp infrastructure.

> People almost never post their project and in the rare cases that they do, it's usually some shambling mess that doesn't actually function
It's funny because you chose to target the one who is pro-AI, who has since posted their code, and not the GP who is against AI, who also didn't post any code to support his opinion that "it turns out the models don't care about your ideas and want to do what's popular in their training data".
Do you see the irony?
