Helpful ritual: not having zoom meetings half of every work day. Went from a remote company that did this to one that didn’t and I am way more productive and less burnt out.
Also helpful: no forced online hangouts and discussion of current events as if it’s necessary to do at work.

This may not help a lot, but I did a good job at my regular employer and connected with coworkers. One of my coworkers introduced me to people that needed some side work.
That turned into a steady stream of contract work so far.
Been doing it as primary income source for about a year and I enjoy it. As long as the work keeps flowing in I’ll stick with this path. I lucked out in that one of the contacts I made runs their own consulting agency so they bring me in on jobs I’m good at when they need help.
So networking, your work ethic, and integrity demonstrated to others seems important..

I’ve found therapy and support groups helpful during and after going through this. People at work and other places may not get it or have the capacity to care to the extent to make a difference.
It’s weird when people are having conversations about dealing with a home purchase or finding a daycare then when asked “what have you been up to?” Saying “dealing with a family member who is/may be dying” and then they say “oh wow, sorry to hear that let us know if we can be of support” and knowing they don’t really mean it and are just kind of trying to move on to an easier conversation.
It’s not an easy thing to go through.

It could have been done before COVID so it would’ve already been done. Business people aren’t dumb and if they could have offshores development, they would have (and they also have been doing this for years anyway).
So why would they hire workers in their own country? People in this thread already have said it.
Time zones, cultural business norms and understanding, native communication ability, tax and legal issues regarding employment (already annoying enough to hire employees in other states in the US for example), ability to connect with clients in the same locale, etc.
Now I’ll give you that this MIGHT shift things to a degree. I don’t think it’ll be the race to the bottom you and others are saying.

It’s not that hard to see why this matters now.
On the one hand you have folks that want to ban rights of LGBTQ folks, end ability to get an abortion safely, for example.
On the other there’s those that want to remove powers of the police, allow homeless drug addicts to take over neighborhoods, and more authoritarian style lockdown policies in public health.
There’s people that really don’t like some of that and will go where their lives feel less restricted.

She mentioned calculating that due to retiring before the age of 65 as an option.
However comparing only 2nd cheapest silver plan seems a little lacking; more equivalent would probably entail comparing price of plans that are actually close to equivalent in terms of deductibles and out of pocket costs.
When I’ve looked at ACA plans, there seems to be significant variance between states and just using the plan color and price doesn’t necessarily indicate they are close to equivalent.

Washington has a ton of cool outdoors stuff. Just be ready to have maybe max a couple months of great weather per year to enjoy it (unless you don't mind overcast and drizzle, or forest fire smoke in summer). Also competing with the other 4+ million people in Seattle metro to get it in out there. Amazing diversity of things to do though.

In addition, some states may penalize the employer for not paying state payroll taxes including state unemployment insurance for the employee. Realistically, this may be difficult for a state to determine but if there is a lease or mortgage involved it could make it more likely.
In any case, as an employee I may not care that much about paying back taxes later or whatever, but I think you're right there could be unintended consequences with this.

Any ideas why it seems like tech hotspots start passing laws like this? I'm thinking of San Francisco, Seattle, and Austin. I feel like there is some correlation, but I do not know what it is.
Nothing is stopping anyone from doing what they think makes sense to them -- scientific studies should still be just that though, following sound principles to be able to draw realistic conclusions. If we use flawed studies to convince others that something is true, that doesn't seem fine to me.

I agree about the inflammatory part regarding the headline. Keep it in context about the particular situation at hand.
That said, in general, I think it can be frightening and traumatic to some people to see angry people destroying things. I know it would be for a kid seeing an angry drunk parent destroy their tablet they play games on, even if it's just a machine. This isn't the same as that, but just trying to say, we should try to understand that certain violent (or whatever you'd like to call destructive) actions will frighten some people.

The dictionary definition of violence seems to include meaning the use of physical force to damage or destroy.
I mean we can say this is different here, but I'd imagine we'd feel different if it was like right wingers smashing up black owned businesses. Maybe I'm wrong though.
