I'm not sure. The GFW is rather tricky and is known to do DPI.
For now, yes we are communicating moves in exactly the way you described EventSource! Eg:
{
    "fen": "rnbqkbnr/pppppppp/8/8/4P3/8/PPPP1PPP/RNBQKBNR b KQkq e3 0 1",
    "status": "active",
    "turn": "b",
    "white_ready": true,
    "black_ready": true,
    "spectators": 1,
    "in_check": false,
    "last_move": "e2e4",
    "game_over": false,
    "available_colors": [],
    "reservations": {
      "white": {"reserved": true, "expires_in": 0},
      "black": {"reserved": true, "expires_in": 0}
    }
  }

No, please don't apologise. Thank you for brining up a great point!
Running something as complex as Lichess is... unwieldy when all I wanted was something I can quickly spin up in 5 mins on nearly any server, with a simple mobile interface for my father-in-law and child, and easy-to-debug (Lichess uses websockets which are often blocked by state firewalls).
If you don't have to deal with an amorphous state actor and a very different Internet culture, then please use Lichess. :)

Thanks! :) I feel like there is a dreadful lack of local-only apps that are runnable on a single simple server, now that everything is overly distributed. Should we bring back more P2P apps?

Hi HN! I built a simple chess game so that my son in Singapore can play chess with his grandfather in China.
Why? There is currently no service or open source software that has all of the following:
* All processing and assets on a single server (Critical to workaround a firewall)
* No email account required (Chinese Internet services typically login via WeChat)
* Works on Android browser
* Simple to install and config
I built it, together with Claude Code, using simple and boring technologies (Django + Client-side JS). I hope that when you use it, you will find it simple to understand (everything is done server-side), deploy, play, and maybe even hack. :)
Live demo: https://family-chess.quee.org (Please be gentle, it's a tiny 2GB VPS!)

StoryChopsticks entered into a copyright agreement with six young authors aged between 7-11 years.
As a part of their Chinese language learning process, these young students are guided by their facilitators to create their own Chinese storybook, experiencing the highs and lows of the creative publishing process.
This contract signifies an important step towards owning intellectual property, building a pipeline for income generation, and above all, learning to make a mark in the world.
To show your support for these young and passionate authors, please join us for the launch of their book on March 25th (Saturday) at 11am GMT+8.
You can sign up for the event here: https://scp.st/book

Few years back, a few of us got together to develop original content and methodologies so as to make Chinese learning fun and interesting. We saw that current materials and pedagogy tend to be dull and irrelevant. We focus on inspiring kids with interesting content, getting them to draw, and creating their own stories.
We now have our own books [1], published books written and drawn by young children, an art exhibition for kids [2], and now a musical!
We have kids from around the world performing including Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, the Philippines, and Ukraine. We use Zoom seminar. It got really really complex [3]!
I invite you to join us this afternoon at 4pm with your kids. It's free! [4]
Here's a trailer [5].
AMA!
(edit: formatting)

We do exactly this at the startup [1] that I'm running. Depending on their level and the equipment they have, young children learn Chinese online with native teachers using Zoom on their phones or StoryLand (eg Gather) on their laptops.
Many commenters have mentioned that socialisation and its associated obligations are beneficial to learning, and this is what we are reminded of everyday among our students.
Kids learn best when they see other kids learn. And kids learn best when they are able to directly apply what they learn into a project that they own. We enable our own students to publish their own books and to perform in musicals that they produce.
Many online education companies fail because they think that all online education ("edTech") is simply digitising the school. It's not. To succeed, we need to think deeply about what online and physical education does best.
Hit me up if you want to learn more.
[1]: https://storychopsticks.com

+1 Been with Migadu since 2017 with no complaints. Lost some mails on an account due to a migration of sorts on their end though that was eventually restored after a ticket.
Michael and his crew are fantastic in progressively introducing new features that you may never find elsewhere (https://www.migadu.com/guides/index.html#features).
Your end users may hate the sparse webmail features though that's nothing that Thunderbird or Outlook may not resolve. HTH!
