It’s actually an interesting fact that every person who was programming in the 80s owns a copy of GEB, which they flipped through a bit and then put on the bookshelf and never actually read.

At some point though, how many states is too many?
We have massive housing affordability and employment shortage problems, meanwhile here’s a tech elite flouting 4x10^9 states which he doesn’t pay taxes on and most of them will not even get used. Is that really fair?

Classic “get over it” condescension. Some people are unable to control their strong physiological reaction to in-person judgement. Go tell professional orchestra players who rely on propranolol to control their stage fright to just grow up and start becoming a “proper functioning adult.”
https://onlinelibrary.wiley.com/doi/10.1002/hast.70031
https://www.thecrimson.com/column/a-night-at-the-symphony/ar...

It’s not human readability I care about. The problem with duplicate code is that the agent will fix one instance, but leave the others buggy. Hilarity ensues.

My experience exactly. I think we’re doing great, but about 3 weeks in I realized it’s an unworkable mess that keeps breaking, and I spend the next two weeks cleaning it up or rebuilding it

Very cool, but I'm skeptical. Over the last year, every Cursor/Claude/Codex project I've worked on devolves into shitty, grafted-on, duct-tape and bandaid'ed architecture, with "fixes" just working around broken code, and tons of duplication that lead to whack-a-mole. The system works at first, but then bugs start piling up and eventually take over. Everyone I talk to shares the same experience. Not to mention that if I, human overseer, don't course correct it many times a day, it goes off into Neverland.
Yet I see comments and articles like above every week, where someone says "Yeah, I just left my agent run for a few nights, and then it made this awesome tool."
There is a huge gap here, but I can't pinpoint it yet. Either I (and everyone I talk to) is Doing It Wrong, or your code is actually flawed at its core and bugs will take exponentially longer to fix and never converge, or... I just need to let my agent run for 3 months??

This was the first big secret “you’re not allowed to know what this is or talk to anyone about it” project inside Google. They wanted to be left alone and especially to not have to integrate with the mail team. And everyone heard rumors of gigantic bonuses if they hit whatever milestones, which wasn’t a thing for other projects. All this made them isolated within the company, and when the project was an obvious flop, you didn’t see anyone rushing over to help them.

Speaking of tone, the phrase "I need you to X" is super condescending. You're not his superior, and he's not your child nor your subordinate. He is not beholden in any way to what you "need."
Much better would be to just use good ol' "please":
> I know it's a hard ask on this site, but please start parsing content and not tone

I wish you hadn’t pulled the Balaji case into your argument. Personally, I find it ludicrous that Altman would hire a hitman to off a copyright whistleblower. Even if one gets past the insane risk of hiring a hitman, and the deep criminal connections required, it would be totally ineffective. He already blew the whistle, and his testimony would be irrelevant since all the evidence persists in disk and in logs.
