Did they hire those software engineers along with their unions?
Not quite. It's all about labor and getting rid of the class that used to (and could have) threatened the elites.

Maybe he was trying to torpedo CDL from ever being viable again? It seems a pretty despicable practice that attempts to shoehorn artificial scarcity to digital media, and I hate the fact the our libraries waste their monies propping up archaic monopolies, so maybe this is a win after all.

For the first time, I can see the advantage of AI for a forum like HN. Have the AI scan the comments and generate a summary and links to show/hide, as an example:
80% of comments are pedantic.
10% of comments discuss the actual topic.
5% of comments are excited/hopeful.
30% of comments are probable astroturfing.
20% of comments are by users who are most likely millenials.
1% of comments are by former /.'ers.
etc.
Ideally this could just run locally and operate on any website as needed, like browser userscripts now.

Yes, this is the situation for my dell laptop's i7-1165G7. Alleged turbo boost to 4.7ghz! In reality, it will hit that for a sec and then throttle to ~1ghz. I had to disable the turbo boost AND two cores in bios to let it even achieve ~2.0ghz speeds consistently. It's a total scam. Turns out my 8th-Gen i5 laptop is almost the same speed on benchmarks, just because it's a few mm thicker with better cooling.

They are not usernames, so why do they call them that? They are more like disposable per-conversation identifiers.
"Usernames in Signal do not function like usernames on social media platforms. Signal usernames are not logins or handles that you’ll be known by on the app – they’re simply a quick way to connect without sharing a phone number."
Also, this is not finally the feature Signal users actually want - not having to sign up for Signal with a phone number and using a username instead.
This new "feature" does very little to make signal more secure or private.

Eagle and Autodesk deserve each other:
"In spring 1991 the dongle protection scheme of EAGLE 2.0 had been cracked causing a decline of 30% in sales, while sales for a reduced demo version with a printed manual saw a significant increase.[4] As a consequence in 1992 CadSoft sent thousands of floppy disks containing a new demo of EAGLE 2.6 to potential users, in particular those who had ordered the former demo but had not subsequently bought the full product.[4] The new demo, however, also contained spy code scanning the user's hard disk for illegal copies of EAGLE.[4] If the program found traces of such, it would show a message indicating that the user was entitled to order a free printed manual using the displayed special order code, which, however, was actually a number encoding the evidence found on the user's machine.[4] Users sending in the filled out form would receive a reply from CadSoft's attorneys.[4][33] The act of spying, however, was illegal as well by German law.[4][33]"
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/EAGLE_(program)#Controversie...
