New comment by kps in "They War-Gamed Dimming the Sun. It Went Worse Than You Think"

Maybe I'm too literal-minded, but the article only talks about partly blocking sunlight. (Dimming the Sun remains an unsolved problem, but is slightly less urgent.)

Yes, “irregular astigmatism”. Since it's not a uniform distortion it can't be corrected by a lens applying the inverse transformation.

The name for this is ‘astigmatic halation’.

As a web developer, all you have to do is support `:prefers-color-scheme`.

Not them, but my left eye isn't fully correctable. The average dark mode site looks like I'm driving the Las Vegas strip in the rain.

And `:prefers-color-scheme` has been supported by all major browsers for seven years.

You're out of luck if, like me, you have a problem with astigmatic halation. All the cool kids use dark mode.

iOS since 26 has been presenting parts of the system in dark mode despite having the device set to light only. One of the ‘best’ is that launcher groups switch to dark background, but they forgot to switch the text colour, so app names are unreadable. I had hoped iOS 27 would fix it, but no, so I'm switching to Android.

Coding in visual mode would be no fun at all on a Tek 4014¹. It's a vector storage tube and can't selectively remove characters from the screen.

Should have drawn an ADM-3A².

To begin with, yes. The decline only started around ten years ago.

Amazon chose for itself a reputation as a place that nobody with a choice will work. I'm pleased to see that pay off.

From the README, this is a collection of names, not a prescriptive proposal for definitive names. Walk over to your local hardware store's paint section and you'll see the same hundreds of names for off-white variations.

They don't mind; it's a targeted market fit. They have Instagram and WhatsApp for other demographics.
