Douglas Englebart once mentioned that with tools we'll be using for the rest of our lives, most learning curves (even the steep ones) are going to be "worth it" as long they are accompanied by a proportionally steep increase in power. Meanwhile, the average UX person's idea of "modernizing" -- more often than not -- boils down to flattening learning curves. If anything, the UX world's use of the word "modernize" as a synonym for "improve" betrays their philosophical bankruptcy.

If Englebart was right, then the open source desktop is already light-years ahead. It is the only place that provides the option to pick, choose, mix, match, & experiment. That, and the steep-curve GUI needed in one line of work may end up being entirely different from the steep-curve GUI needed in another. The move to "unify" desktop & mobile in the browsers & window managers (free or proprietary) is a glaring example of how one one size does not fit all. I cannot tell you how many people outside of our circle still mourn the loss of scrollbars.

The emotional reaction comes from a deep-seated evolutionary survival mechanism that has served mankind well to present day. Uggo fuck club tells you EVERYTHING you need to know about these people, and more importantly, their thoughts & perceptions. If you join uggo fuck club, your perceptions are off. Why should I value this guy's perceptions & prescriptions relating to ML when he can't even swing the right ones over his own BMI?

Whether RH paid $100M for this well poisoning, or however much more/less it pays its staff developers to do the same (i.e. wayland, systemd...), the effect is the same: more churn & instability in the Linux space.

Personal experience is opposite. Doing stats on millions of rows in any SQL is a one-liner. Working with more than a few screenfuls of data in Excel is a misery.

Since free relational DBs like sqlite & mysql came along, only optimal use I see of spreadsheets "in the wild" now is psychological (i.e. real-time "massaging" of the numbers to overcome objections). For things that are more objective, we have so many superior options. Not just databases either. Jupyter & various other REPLs are also great.

I don't have an opinion on pro/anti feminism. I have a big opinion on paid mass manipulators -- especially ones being paid with public funds. It is outrageous --- that they steal our money, then have the gall to propagandize us with it. That they had her operate out of Europe also illustrates how they managed to work around Smith-Mundt at the time.

This is only half right. The capitalists loved feminism. Biggest expense of many businesses is labor. Double the labor pool, labor cost plummets, & profits skyrocket, so of course the capitalists at the CIA appreciated Steinem, and vice versa.

From the demos & article, looks & sounds more like proto-web hypermedia than operating system. Even if it had succeeded, it would have grown the same way WHATWG grew (i.e. like cancer).
