Yeah , that's fair. More than promotion i was trying to suggest i had also built something similar and kind of understand the product space. It's this dev thing, can't shake it off i guess. But i get what you meant.
Apart from that i have a theory that there is a lot of ML based ranking and classification that is happening at the backend.

Hi ,Congrats on the launch.
I built a free iOS app also which has chess puzzles.
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/knighty-chess-puzzles/id674524...
Would appreciate feedback.
```
Not sure if that's why it was moved to `stub for off topicness`. I wonder if it is some kind of categorisation logic based on text.
Thanks. Currently i am using the HN api (https://github.com/HackerNews/API) . It's a read only API and doesn't support writes. I heard that might be away to do this with a webview initially, haven't explored that yet.
hey HN,
I am re launching an HN client app that i built this year. It got very little traction when i launched earlier. Following YC advice to do multiple launches, I am going to give it another shot.
It’s fairly basic, but here are some of the features that I hope you would like.
- Minimal, distraction-free UI
- keyword based search functionality to see past stories.
- Dark mode support
- Breeze through comments with collapse functionality.
- Bookmark your favourite stories to read later or revisit any time
- All your reading history is saved.
- Export reading history when you want it.
I hope you give it a try! The app is free with an optional contribution for those who wish to do it.
https://apps.apple.com/us/app/h-for-hacker-news/id6744145932
Hey HN!
I've been fascinated by chess for years , and always wanted to build a commercial app related to chess. So here is my humble attempt at that.
The app scans 2D chessboards using your camera, then runs Stockfish analysis on the position.
Here's how it works technically:
- We do segmentation first to crop the chessboard from the full image.
- Then we perform object detection to identify individual pieces
- Bounding box analysis for board alignment and perspective correction. This gives us a matrix 8 x 8 which represents the chessboard.
- We convert this position to FEN (Forsyth-Edwards Notation)
- Pass this FEN string to stockfish engine to get engine analysis.
The object detection model is reasonably good to the point where I thought of making the app public, but it isn’t 100% always and hence there is also an edit board option to handle it.
Right now I used a small dataset to train the object detection model. Labelled the pieces with bounding boxes using label studio and it’s a standard YOLO model. I am pretty confident on improving the model further with more data.
Try it:
iOS: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/stockfish-chess-analysis/id674...
App is behind a paywall as I need to run a server for inference. But there is a generous free tier for anyone who wants to give the app a go.
Would love feedback on the app and the underlying tech!
I asked what's the best time to make a show HN post and got the below output.
When should you hit “Submit” on your Show HN?
TL;DR
The historical data say your odds of going viral improve when you post:
Saturday 18 UTC (≈ 2 PM US-Eastern, 11 AM US-Pacific)
Early Sunday 02 – 04 UTC (Saturday evening in the Americas)
Week-day late morning UTC, especially
Tuesday 11 – 15 UTC (7 – 11 AM US-Eastern)
Wednesday 15 UTC
Friday 12 – 14 UTC
These slots combine the highest average scores with a healthy number of past posts, meaning success isn’t due to just a few outliers.
Hi HN,
I've built an iOS app called Knighty Chess, designed for improving chess tactics through daily puzzles and structured learning, and I'd love to share it with you.
The app offers around 20,000 puzzles organized into skill trees, covering various tactical motifs from basic to more complex patterns. It includes daily challenges and tracks progress with XP, achievements and leaderboard.
You can check it out on the App Store: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/knighty-chess/id6745241794
 This is my second project related to chess. Last year I built termichess , a terminal app to play chess which received a lot of support from the HN community.
This was a personal project, and I'm here to discuss it. I'm particularly interested in any feedback you might have on the puzzle selection, user experience, or any features you think would make it better for learning.
Thanks for taking a look
I built Libris.fm[1] , it's a free iOS app written in swift which gives access to users for 10000+ free audiobooks.
The app is objectively better than many popular apps in this segment which have a paywall and tons of ads. However i hardly get any downloads since the launch.
I have tried posting in r/audiobooks[2] and got some decent feedback. But I don't have any other clue on how to get more users for the app.
I don't have any monetization plan other than an optional tip jar that I have placed in the app.
Looking for advice on how to make more users aware of the app. This is a side project and I don't have any maketing budget as an indie developer.
[1] https://apps.apple.com/us/app/libris-fm-free-audiobooks/id6744654703
Hi HN,
I'm the creator of Libris.fm. I've been a long-time fan of audiobooks, especially classic literature found in the public domain. I wanted a simple, dedicated app to listen to these works narrated by real people, without any distractions.
Libris.fm brings together over 10,000 human-narrated audiobooks, primarily sourced from LibriVox and the Internet Archive.
Key points:
Completely Free: No subscriptions or paywalls.
No Ads & No Tracking: Built with privacy in mind. Just the books.
Human Narration: Focused specifically on volunteer-read recordings, not synthetic voices.
Simple Interface: Includes essentials like background playback, speed adjustment, and skip controls.
Content: Lots of classic literature, poetry, history, drama, etc. Please checkout the discover screen and see for yourself.
This was a passion project born out of my love for literature and a belief that these public domain works deserve to be easily accessible. It's not trying to be an Audible or Spotify competitor, but rather a focused tool for enjoying these specific types of audiobooks.
It's currently available here: https://apps.apple.com/us/app/h-for-hacker-news/id6744145932
I'm actively developing it and would genuinely appreciate any feedback from the HN community – feature requests, bug reports, or general thoughts are all welcome!
