New comment by kylehotchkiss in "US report details extent of 'devastating' dating-app scams"

An interesting aside to the dating app discussion - religious institutions discourage - implicitly or explicitly - dating within the community. I’m 34 (like literally able to start a family) and one of my pastors told me they prefer people didn’t because it’s “messy”. Statistics state that only 3-4% of couples meet at religious events now.

My guess is a liability concern because churches don’t want to be blamed if things go sideways or risk having to deal with people living together before marriage (statistically almost no Christians are abstinent anymore and the purity culture mentality hasn’t really left the scene)

New comment by kylehotchkiss in "America's Longest Highway Tunnel (2025)"

kylehotchkiss — Tue, 13 Oct 2026 00:10:54 +0000

This is such a fun tunnel to drive through. The goal is to keep your tires on the wet train tracks and pretend you're a train, but the tracks are trying to eject you constantly. Also the diesel fumes from the locomotive that just went through have not yet been blown out and it smells like a level 4 migraine.

8/10 highly recommended.

kylehotchkiss — Thu, 01 Oct 2026 00:55:10 +0000

o__O my url bar doesn’t currently say Reddit? This argument feels red pilled and not curious nor productive. Women have plenty of valid frustrations with the dating pool. I don’t live in SF but the last woman whom I talked to there told me many of y’all just have mattresses on the floor and like no bed frame. There are places to improve fellas

Yeah, dating apps are problematic. No, nobody here is going to fix that with another stupid app. But I think a lot of these “meet with a group of strangers at dinner” biz concepts are cool and gonna try some soon.

This feels low effort by HN standards. Nothing wrong with the sentiment, but no domain name? Pretty superficial call to action? Gotta argue harder for what you think we lost, cite some news sources etc.

I'm always excited about running local models at home. This is one of the reasons. I pull it down from hugging face, and it continues to work at the same level of performance indefinitely.

Anecdotal: LLMs like the hallucinate things and did a poor job of determining when to leave things null/blank. A more structured approach with confidence ratings helps resolve.
