Local models are going to be pretty useful by the time the current companies have to face their finances. The cost of entry will be higher end hardware though.

Not niche, but photography has a way of opening doors because you push yourself to get to places you might not otherwise.

Maybe learn a new language that isn't European or Japanese.

If "niche" matters to you, anything currently receiving any type of investing (ML etc) is probably not gonna work.

Agreed. I live in a city that's top 5% of safest cities in CA and these cameras have sprouted up everywhere. I reached out to my cities representative about it and he ignored my outreach (nice thing about instagram - that "read" indicator!). The most blatant is one that just points into the Home Depot parking lot. I don't see them at target.

It's gross but I think the cohort of America that watches Fox News all day probably loves these things because they've been brainwashed with crime reports that are disproportionate from reality.

With India getting generic GLP-1s, the tech to "print" peptides will probably see costs fall off a cliff, so we're probably only looking at the tip of the iceberg with the amount of damages the reddit biohacker bros will accomplish. Men especially are feeling a lot more lonely and image-conscious and there are peptides people claim make them taller[1] or muscular[2].

I made my M2 Max generate a biryani recipe for me last night with 64gb ram and the baseline qwen3.5:35b model. I used the newest ollama with MLX.

Under 3 minutes to get all that. The thinking is amusing, my laptop got quite warm, but for a 35b model on nearly 4 year old hardware, I see the light. This is the future.

Yes. I've spent months running Qwen2.5-8B on my barebones 16gb ram M4 Mac mini to handle identifying sites from google search results. It has been rock solid. I'm not even running this MLX-powered improvement on it yet.

Your idea of what people need from Local LLMs and others are different. Not everybody needs a /r/myboyfriendisai level performance.

Helping non-technical people get off of ChatGPT.com and using increasingly better local models seems worth celebrating and continued iteration.
