Having been there i have to respectfully disagree. Probably because, as far as i can tell, you are warping their intentions to be what your intentions would be if you did what they did.

It seems like different people? The early tech scene was defined by people who got into tech because they loved it, jobs were paying under six figures. Then it became a gold rush, and the tech scene became defined by the newcomers who were after cash first, tech second. It's not that the old timers gave up on their ideals (well, some did), they were simply supplanted by larger numbers of people following the money.

In my opinion there is no "slipping mask", merely a changing of the guard that always happens when massive piles of generational wealth are at stake.

I really don't think it's AGI. From living in the valley, it looks a whole lot more like giant piles of cash and "prestige".

It really depends where you live. Around here every home built since ~1970 has an HOA. The cities have demanded them, because they can push some of the work like re-paving streets onto the HOA as part of the founding documents.

Many of them do. My aunt bought a new car last year and was bragging about how big the screen was. She seemed confused that i thought a big screen was a downgrade.

I think the mistake you have is starting from the wrong premise. The premise, IMO, should be that OP has been harassed, demeaned, and otherwise been made to feel bad for 20+ years for using the units they were raised with. At least that's my experience as an American.

Most people don't seem to care about the units, what the haters care about (not you, but the general experience) is having an opportunity to proclaim how much better they are than other people, mostly over an accident of birth.

The performance is nice, but the advanced modding scene is non-existent. In java a mod author can do just about anything they can imagine and write code for. Somehow i doubt we will ever see dimensional doors as a bedrock mod.

Perhaps this varies by region? I don't know anyone that buys burgers in a packet. They buy ground beef and either make patties or balls (for smash burgers).

This is the law in California (https://www.sidley.com/en/insights/newsupdates/2024/11/calif...) as of January. Several games I use have recently changed their buttons from "buy" to "license" or similar as a result

The desire is relateively simply explained. Some people used to find HN interesting, but the modern set of things being upvoted isn't matching their interests anymore. They already ignore the content they don't like, the problem is the content they do like isn't there anymore. The assumption, I expect, is that if there was less LLM content the site would have more of the "older style" content they used to enjoy. I don't necessarily think that will happen, but that's my interpretation of the sentiment.

depends on who. For the average HN person? I imagine it's a wash, some yes and some no. For the average person? I think they see it as a benefit.

Personally? It annoys me a bit because I assume the AI is being done server side and is used to artificially differentiate products.

My city has 30k people, although we are part of a larger metro. Store brand eggs are $9.50/dozen. Alternatively Costco is still selling 60 packs for $20, although they have had per customer limits recently and don't alway have stock. Works out to $4 per dozen. But thats a lot of eggs.

Honestly, it seems completely irrelevant that a simple reading of the commerce clause isn't that powerful. What matters is how things are applied, and what precedents have been established. As applied the commerce clause is immensly powerful. As layman we can whinge about how words have been twisted, but in terms of things i can personally influence it means exactly nothing.

The problem is this is what people are being told is happening. I've talked to laypeople that think chatgpt is a superintelligent thing they get 100% truthful answers from. I saw a podcast last week from a PhD (in an unrelated field) claiming AGI will be here in 2027. As long as there are people out there claiming AI is everything, there will be people that look at whats available and say no, it's not actually that (yet).

Maybe this is a physical development thing? Because i can't imagine a world in which my mouse is more accurate than my keyboard. The mouse requires two-way responsive action. I have to both move the mouse and observe the movement with my eyes to update the movement as necessary.

With the keyboard there is no such coordination, I simply think the thing i want to happen and press the appropriate keys.

Because the ending was pretty meh. All this excitement, and then Ding just flubs up an end game that most super gm's should be able to draw against stockfish.

The best finale's are often when two players at their best duke it out, and one comes out on top. This was simply not Ding's best.

depends on the market. The 5kw options i was quoted were Enphase 5p batteries, average price from multiple installers was $5k per battery installed.
