Why is every CEO predicting AGI in the next 2 to 5 years? I get the need to market yourself to the world, but this seems a bit much in terms of embellishments.
Don't get me wrong. I fully believe in the potential of current-gen AI. I am myself employed in the field. But to me it seems pretty obvious that these models are for the most part just memorizing and interpolating at huge scales with limited generalizability. I just don't see how we can go from current-gen to AGI without a huge paradigm shift. But in the statements made by these CEOs it is implied that this is not necessary.
I just don't get what sort of strategy they are following. Wouldn't these embellishments eventually come to haunt them when their promises are not realized? This seems to be Tesla FSD all over again. Then too it was claimed that only scale was necessary to achieved the objective.

Nvidia isn't very big on opensource either. Most CUDA libraries are still closed source. I think this might eventually be their downfall, because people want to know what they are working with. For example with PyTorch, I can profile the library against my use case and then decide to modify the official library to get some bespoke optimization. With CUDA, if I need to do that, I need to start from scratch and guess as to whether the library from the api already has such optimizations.

Make sure they are living full lives and have many offline occupations to fill their time with. Social media addicts are just bored teenagers who have nothing else better to do, or teenagers who feel as though they cannot be part of the local social groups so they retreat to the online world.

I think it's because Americans have a hard time understanding Norwegian culture enough to manipulate them. Look at Canada and the UK for examples to the opposite.

I live in Europe (Germany) and we have no wokeness here. Saying something sexist or racist isn't a big deal. Some people will think you are an asshole and that's it. Our leftists go to the US and come back ranting about how oppressive wokeness is.
I'm a minority myself and have experienced my fair share of racism. But I have no desire to push for somebody to get fired for making a racist joke or some such thing. I will just lower my opinion of them and move on with my life. I don't want to live in a country where a wrong word at the wrong time might mean you're fired.

That's not true. PG has been ranting about wokeness for quite a long time already. I don't think you quite understand the nuance of a lot of these definitions. PG isn't a conservative MAGA guy nor a bigot. He just does not like how the woke crowd goes about trying to affect social change and how unsavory types use the woke crowd to achieve their political goals.

Appeal to authority needs to be used with prudence. I wouldn't trust pg on a medical topic, but I have no issue hearing what he has to say on this particular topic because as far as I am concerned academic credentials do not give you a better understanding of the contemporary social climate.
For that matter Trump and MAGA have no degrees in psychology and sociology. Despite this, they were much more in tune with the American public than the Democrats with their fake intellectualism.

Crazy and rather ironic that an essay from pg himself gets flagged no HN.

I studied at an engineering college with a disproportionate amount of men, and I saw a lot of these ugly social dynamics. I think you are just blind to it all because things work out for you.

Although I like the quote I do not think it is good advice for the younger generations. No early 20s to early 30s girl is going to settle for a guy just because he is "handy". It takes much more than that. It is also not fun being with someone who is not into you physically.

I am starting to think that part of the reason we have a reproduction crisis is because both genders find the bottom 80% of the opposite gender physically unappealing.

The internet isn't less hateful today, anyway.
In the past internet communities were more heterogeneous. Now everyone lives in a bubble. This makes the snowflakes feel more safe. But this also concentrates the racists, sexists and bigots in their own bubbles where their hate festers.
That heterogeneity is what I miss the most and snowflakes in general ruined web 2.0 for me.
