ITT lots of complaining, not much building. Microsoft does not give a fuck what you think - they only care if the revenue line goes up. And the revenue line keeps going up despite this instability. Want to build the next unicorn? Build a GitHub competitor.

The problem is actions/checkout@11bd71901bbe5b1630ceea73d27597364c9af683 probably doesn’t do this same pinning, and the actions ecosystem is such an intertwined mess that any single compromised action can propagate to the rest

By what metric is “the level of quality is much, much higher” in the Django codebase? ‘cause other than the damn thing actually working, the primary metric of a codebase being high quality is how easy it is to contribute to. And evidently, it’s not.

Not a valid legal defence. I think we need to build tooling that makes moral stances like yours easier to adhere to, then see how people react when they realize just how impossible it is.

The entire article talks about “guessing” the bucket name as being the attack enabler, not the leaking of it. What does the landscape look like once you start doing the basics like hashing your bucket names? Is this still a problem worth engineering for?
