I really do like the idea and the thinking behind it. I wpuld even argue that modern Europeans are already embracing and practicing much if it. Nearly no one I know in NL and DE works more than 36hrs per week. And we all have a sh”tload of holidays and irregular days off additionally. Need to get kids from school earlier? no prob… Need to spontanously (!) to go the dentist? no prob. (Honest disclaimer: I am talking here solely about my white collar bubble, no idea about blue collar to be honest. Not much contact with people from that field unfortunately)

So we surely made progress here in the direction of being more idle (though one could question wether you are truly “idle” if you fill your free time with staring at your phones screen, consuming the latest societal rage bait. But i’d say in the spirit of the essay, yes, we are much more idle thanks to tech).

BUT! Is this a survival strategy? While we Europeans are super idle, Chinese arose to be a super power. The US dominates tech and the future technologies. Russia is banging on our front door and we dont have the military means and will to put an end to it. So while idle ness is a great mode for Being, is it a great mode for making sure the own civilization survives?

Thats always my problem with those ideas. They sound super nice in theory, but in the harsh world, there will always be a predator who just works a little bit hardwr to get you …

over and over again, we see that governments are pretty bad at doing their job. over and over again, they prove to us that they cant handle money, that they are corrupt, that they put the interest of their political class above that of the people.

so are you surprised?

id rather be left alone as much as possible in my pursuit of happiness. On my own terms!

Are all the news items about people being arrested for exercising speech not true?

I‘ve heard from multiple people already that there is a massive prosecution going in the UK against people that say „hateful“ things on the internet. Whereby „hateful“ is vaguely defined but usually in relation to religious feelings.

Here in Amsterdam, most of the schools have a complete ban(!) for pupils below age 15 or 16. It has been a great decision so far. My daughters are essentially phone (and internet) free until they come hone from school. I love it

Philosophical insights and methods can be used for politics of any color.

I do agree that its wrong to say that Habermas would be responsible(!) for any of that though. As if thinking up stuff would make you responsible for the misuse of those ideas down the road.

It is called „ Palantir Goes to the Frankfurt School“ and analysis Karp‘s PhD thesis. Which, even though he didnt write it under Habermas supervision, was highly influenced by the Frankfurt school (Adorno et al).

For a full understanding of any text, you always need to consider the context as well as the content and the author, in this case Carmack, is part of the context. You cant just separate them. This is especially true when it concerns contemporary issues.

I ve just vibed for 2 weeks a pretty complex Python+Next.js app. I've forced Codex into TDD, so everything(!) has to be tested. So far, it is really really stable and type errors haven't been a thing yet.

Not wanting to disagree, I am sure with Rust, it would be even more stable.

I am dumb. I use Anthropic Api and Opus for some, Sonnet for other tasks. Accumulated quite some costs.

But i book it as a business expense , so its less painful as if it would be for private.

But yeah, could optimize for cost more

a lot of really fun stuff. From fun little scripts to more complex business/life/hibby admin stuff that annoyed me a lot (eg organizing my research). for instance i can just drop it a YT link in Telegram, and it then will automatically download the transcripts, scan them, and match them to my research notes. If it detects overlap it will suggest a link in the knowledge base.

Works super nice for me because i am a chaotic brain and never had the discipline to order all my findings. openClaw does it perfectly for me so far..

i dont let it manage my money though ;-)

edit: it sounds crazy but the key is to talk to it about everything!! openClaw is written in such a way that its mega malleable. and the more it knows , the better the fit. it can also edit itself in quite a fundamental way. like a LISP machine kind of :-)
