Ask HN: Is it worth learning ML and maths as a software engineer in 2024?

As a software engineer with little memory of maths from school :( I have become obsessed with machine learning and all of the advancements in AI. So much so, my curious mind is starting to learn pytorch and some of the associated maths (I feel like I'm learning things and making hands on progress).

Have any SEs learnt similar? Did it help at all with work, did you move over to a different role based on strong software engineering with weak maths/ML?

Let's be fair... If automation dies what we all probably think it will. Everything is going to be abundant and free. Music perhaps is the best example. It used to be £25 to buy an LP in the UK. Include inflation and it's a lot more.

Forward to today, housing is in crisis everywhere. From London to Sydney, every single western city is unaffordable for all.

My ask is this, can we yes WE digital folk, do what has been done for music to housing. So that we can stop working our lives into the ground to afford it.

Ideas wanted, I'd quit my job to work on this.

Most developers can't actually code, once the motor skills has been assumed it is nothing but brute intelligence.. and then you can become a lead/architect... It takes 10 years to become good enough. I feel pretty safe ;)

Hello HN'ers

I've been working professionally as a software engineer for 10 years+. I'm pretty good with cloud computing, building services and all that goes along with that.

I'm also a creative person but really have kind of ignored UX and design.. I'd love to strengthen my skills here so that I could essentially build any kind of app or website with world class UX + design.

Are there any brilliant books that you could recommend, any resources that absolutely changed your being as a UX designer?

Interesting points raidicy, as an engineer I would have similar requirements and really don't like seeding control to third party products :) But then, a no-code almost non techie type, might just want to get something working

Hey HN,

I'm a software engineer and seem to spend more and more time writing pretty much the same system. Read message from x, call api, call api... respond etc etc. It's is integration work largely but it seems to be becoming the norm. I've had an idea to essentially distill those patterns in a Saas system. Is this a stupid idea or not? Would any of the engineers/managers entertain using such a tool?

We used it for a production project which I inherited.

Honestly I'm not a bit fan of anything Orm like, as such there is some magic, I believe out of the box it will literally just create tables and keys for you.

For what it is, it's very fast for prototyping things out.

I would personally just use the in built jsonb functionality of postgres and build out my own repositories. Saves confusion from all of the magic.

Western exonomies are about to collapse, it is becoming apparent that food is still being produced, we are fed, sheltered and community spirit is high. We are going to survive and the government are going to pump billions into each of our economies.

Given that society is so advanced that our food is ordered through the internet and our total abundance underlined. Will a new system prevail, will we realise that the current insanely inflated asset system is over.

Interesting times.

I fundamentally disagree with this article. SQL is arguably the most important language in a developers toolbox. The attempts to isolate and replace it's complexity through ORMs and nosql implementations has never resulted in a viable replacement.

Like mathematical syntax fits mathematical logic. So SQL matches data retrieval. Let's stop trying to replace it just because it's old. SQL is amazing.

A question, perhaps to anybody who has lived through this situation.

I am luckily in an economic position to do one of the following over the next 4 years.

a) Pay off mortgage on small house b) Sell said house and buy bigger house with mortgage that will last me another 10-20 years.

Has anybody faced such a situation? I quite like the idea of paying off the mortgage and slowly becoming self sufficient whilst building personal projects without the worry of the bank stealing my house?
