haha yes! i built feedgrab.net but once it did what i wanted, i stopped building it. it just works. doesn't really make RSS cool again, but it does the job for me

Blogs on indie platforms like Bear and Pagecord get promoted in the Discover (and Spotlight, on Pagecord) feeds which definitely drives traffic

I agree! That's why I built Pagecord. Like Substack it's a blog with a mailing list, but it's also your personal website (pages, for example) with a custom domain. Also, source available.

Most people will defer to Substack because (A) the brand, and (B) it can be monetised which is probably the biggest draw.

Maybe I need to bring monetisation to Pagecord? :)

Isn't his entire point on this short talk that one can become very wealthy by creating a product that people love and want to tell their friends about? I think it's also a nudge to students at one of the most prestigious universities in the world to consider building a startup. That's it.

I don't think there's anything insidious or controversial or misleading here. It's a simple talk to a bunch of clever students using contrived examples that emphasise this point.
