Noticing how the M6 has finally doubled the M1's single core performance, nearly six years later. The M1 mini was my first foray into mac computing. I used it as my daily driver until I got the M1 Macbook Pro a year later. Been using that ever since. I think Apple's real problem is that they built machines that can last. I've had no interest in upgrading or buying something else, even though I want to just for pet projects but can't justify the extra cost.

The Irregular post mortem comes down to lack of basic security controls

"Ultimately, most of the issues we’ve discovered were due to internet access controls."

That seems so incredibly basic and common sense that you would test and monitor for that type of outbound access. It is baffling that a security lab missed that.

In that article, OpenAI provides the context that this is a completely separate event from Hugging Face incident.

Literally what I was about to comment. This is meant to capture the normies, the busy parents managing school and work, the grandparents who want to make most of their retirement.

The date keeps changing on each release so every version bump becomes AGPL five years from the date its published. Its an interesting model, but necessary to be aware of the nuance in case you ever want to consume it.

The migration guide does say there are breaking changes, but the interpretation I have is "this won't have new features but allows us to develop new features".

The evolutionary mistake that allowed us to walk on our feet and use our hands enabled us to build tools, conquer our environment and tackle hard problems. A humanoid robot provides a good blueprint for creating a robot that can do anything.

A solar field robot can only do one thing. A humanoid robot with a software model that allows it to install solar fields and then switch to a new model is a much more compelling use case. Eventually you're going to run out of solar fields to install, then you need a solar field repair bot, a solar field cleaning bot, etc. General purpose robots that can switch models to perform different tasks is not a dead end, but definitely a very hard problem.

Recent work in this space has got me looking at using local models for daily use. I’m waiting for people to start dumping some of the previous generation minis on Facebook marketplace or eBay so I can pick one up. Of course there’s also other options. I’m still hammering out my requirements and what I want to do besides putz around.

I loved the Peter Weir adaptation and was always hopeful there would be more, particularly with that ending leaving it open like that. I picked up the first book recently so that I could read through it on vacation. I do tend to agree with Jan Morris in that only people who knew the author have reason to care about his personal life. Of course there are limits, and given the author has been dead for 26 years and the events he is accused of happened 70+ years ago, O'Brian can no longer atone for his past misdeeds. I'm not certain if knowing that O'Brian was a horrible family man will change my enjoyment of the first book, but that remains to be seen. I may not even get through reading it due to other factors, anyway.

I was curious if his family ever wrote about him and his son Richard Russ did in below article. I think this gives a good insight into how his son felt about his father, and particularly how his mother felt until her death.

I agree with a lot of her points but that word really is revealing of her thoughts about OpenAI.
