Yeah I don't take Java jobs. There's nothing wrong with Java per se, but it usually has implications.

Everyone has to deal with other code that might not even be from the same org. The "check it in CI" answer isn't an excuse either. You're bolting on so much extra crap that way.

I just don't see why nullability is a problem in the first place.

It's decent for backends. I'd rather use JS, but there can be performance or ecosystem reasons to use Java. They fixed a lot of the gaps it had. JS used to have a big edge in async-await while Go had n-m multithreading, but now Java has the latter.

Can you explain what the issue is with nullability here? Is the concern that someone's code returns null in normal circumstances but doesn't document that well, so you don't check if null? Cause if it's an error situation, one way or another some exception has to be thrown.

It's a panic in Go, not an exception. In practice that's usually a whole process crash. You can catch panics and kinda use them like exceptions, but it's not conventional.

Everything is locking down so hard. When someone says they got banned without breaking any rules, I believe them because it happened to me, but also assume there's some reason they appeared out of the ordinary. It's not going to be fair either, like they trust phones more than PCs.

Every social media site is like this now. They fear the scrapers. Most of the people complaining about having to log in on X, they intentionally have no account in the first place because they don't like the site's owner or something.

I say this as part of the exception. The only reason I don't use X is because they banned me for no reason. Probably not the common case.

Passports seem a lot better. You scan it with NFC, and the chip inside proves authenticity via asymmetric crypto.

It's cleaner to hold some of a corp's money in escrow if they're handling IDs, to ensure they can't avoid fines via bankruptcy.

MS Teams is terrible, and yet it's gotten this far. I don't know if Slack or Teams is winning, just that Jabber won't beat Teams at its own game.

Thankfully we use Slack where I work. The cross-org channels are cool.

Before X flagged me as a bot for no reason, I had a mostly unused account and can confirm it was showing me a ton of right-wing content. Also lots of stuff related to Elon Musk in particular.

On the flip side, X has less moderation, and it's pretty even-handed. They're allowing a lot of pretty mild right-wing content that Twitter was banning people for.

It's not impossible that the US got rid of the last shah too. He had turned against western interests at some point.
