We switched to Mercury only to discover you don’t support wiring money to all countries (we need South Africa support). Perhaps this (hopefully temporary) limitation could/should be included in your FAQ? In the interim we’re going to look into Pilot for team payments. Anyone here using Pilot?

This brings back memories... I was the technical half of a two person team who built the very first Thomas Cook website in 1995. Of course, e-commerce was a step too far at the time, but there was much excitement when the spec for HTML frames came out mid-project (don’t judge).

This appears to be a case of patriotism vs the Almighty Dollar, albeit with shades of nuance. Is it standard practice for security software vendors to provide enterprise clients with audit rights? And could a restriction in future market opportunity lead technology companies to avoid doing business with the government?

The article above is specifically about VC-funded companies by definition. Nobody is arguing that you can’t be a successful entrepreneur outside of a startup hub. But if you’re going to play the “bubble metrics” game, raise VC, grow rapidly and exit for “bubble metrics” valuations, your odds are way higher if you move. Silicon Valley is generally full of young founders. They move before they have families. They couch-surf, eat ramen noodles and don’t let concern for a safety net impede possible success (however unlikely that is).

The kind of entrepreneurs most likely to succeed (and therefore gain the attention of VCs) figure out how to relocate to startup hubs where they can get the attention of the VC community and network their way into the ecosystem. It’s way easier to move from Florida to San Francisco that it is from Paris, Sydney or Cape Town, and the extra hoops foreign entrepreneurs have to jump through makes them stand out all the more (relatively speaking). Very few American entrepreneurs in Silicon Valley grew up there either. It becomes a self-selecting sample.

This has all the makings of a 'KDE vs Gnome'-like battle. For those not around at the time, a quick refresher: KDE was launched to applause and was based on a (then) restrictive Troll Tech license (for its QT library). This restrictive license lead directly to the creation of the Gnome project and so we saw a very promising desktop environment lose momentum and support as community resources were diverted to reinventing the wheel with Gnome (IMHO).

Yes, we have more choice now in the world of Linux desktops, but I still believe hundreds of man years were wasted and the Linux desktop effort set back years, due to Troll Tech's choice of license. Of course, Troll Tech finally realized the error of their ways, but as history clearly shows us, it was too late.

So, does Meteor want to risk being a KDE (or even Svbtle) and have the community praise it for their ideas and invest huge amounts of time reinventing the wheel, or do they want to harness the unstoppable momentum of the developer community?

Agreed AirBnB can't create the expectation of covering the cost of apartments being "trashed" for fear of abuse of the policy. You can be sure that their lawyers are vetting all messages too, for fear of creating a chain of liability, should they start covering the costs.

That said, what about offering a generous bounty? Say $1m in this case for the successful apprehension and prosecution of the guilty party (or parties). This figure would have to be ratcheted down after the initial PR success for fear of people committing such crimes in future with the intent of enriching their friend/relative who turns them in.

You should show your pricing up front. I'd never start a trial if I didn't know what the price was going to be after the 30 day trial was up. I'd be worried I'd like it but would find the price too high.
