It's not collateral damage in the gaza war. This was a family in the west bank, where there is no hamas and no "war", that was gunned down in cold blood for no reason. Not even presenting a threat. I hope one day you are able to find compassion.

Generally when running these kinds of tests you measure for further down the funnel metrics than sign ups. It's obvious sign ups would increase. In all the tests I've done around this, you look either at revenue or engagement over a longer term.

One thing to note about coding in Clojure — if you never learned Java, you hit a wall at a certain point. I only know scripting languages and I had fun writing little scripts in clojure, but at a certain point the lack of java knowledge and it's class system / standard libraries held me back from doing more serious things.

The second point doesn't make sense at all. Consumers vastly prefer standalone VR, and it was always the future.
For the first point, I'll give you that they prefer playing on their own platform. But they haven't "broken" anything. While yes you do need a software layer, e.g. Revive, you can still play steam games on oculus and oculus games on an index. And you have no idea whether that would have happened anyway as one of these companies got bigger.
Google used to say "do no evil" and now they don't, and they didn't get acquired before they changed. These things just happen.

One, be as transparent as possible, as early as possible. Hopefully your company has not been hiding that there are financial problems so that it won't come as a huge surprise that layoffs are happening. If you haven't done this yet, please start communicating. You do not necessarily need to tell the whole company that layoffs are happening, but you do need to tell them that this might happen.
Two, avoid saying anything about how hard this was for you. They do not care.
It is definitely best to tell people in person, and individually. I don't have any advice as to how to do so in a small space. It is for the best to restrict access to sensitive systems once a person is laid off, but you can keep them access to slack or email so people can say goodbye if they'd like.
