Age 77.. started with Fortran in '68 on an IBM1130, assembler on a Linc-8 in '70, then at UofWaterloo on IBM360/75 with (omg) 3MB ram. Then scientific programming mostly Fortran or asm, switched to turbo Pascal in 88-89, then Delphi and MATLAB. Currently mainly work in VsCode using markdown codeblocks in a way a bit like Jupyter (see VsCode extension Hover-Exec) for a range of stuff including art installations.

Noting your comment, I couldn't resist linking to some more CSS art:

Not sure how many centred divs are in it though...

New comment by marzetti in "Which word begins with "y" and looks like an axe in this picture? (2017)"

marzetti — Thu, 18 Jan 2024 04:28:38 +0000

The term 'paint pot' is perhaps confusing, the drawing represents the end of a 'tube of paint' out of which yellow paint has been squeezed. The 'y' word is indeed 'yellow'.

After a fairly exhausting search of alternatives, I ended up with Newscracker .. it copes well with a large number of feeds, has good capability for classification, and I can tolerate the single ad up front (on about 60% of starts).

New comment by marzetti in "Installing a payphone in my house"

Thanks for this article and the comments. Reminds me of a trick we kids did in the early 60s (yeah, sorry) with the British 'phone box' pay phones. We called it 'tapping the phone', but it wasn't spy style listening. Passed from kid to kid the amazing trick was you could dial the number by tapping the handset (10 taps for zero, 9 taps for 9, ..) and the phone would ring the number but you didn't then have to 'press button A' to speak.. you simply made the call, spoke normally, hung up, and pressed button B to get your money back! Sadly, I never tried international calls... When we moved to New Zealand around '63-4, I discovered the phone dial was reversed, in the UK it was 1-9,0, in NZ it was 9-1,0. (So emergency calls were 111 not 999 as in the UK.) The trick still worked but, except for 0, you had to '10s complement' the taps. Maybe because of that none of the kids I knew at the time in NZ appeared to know the trick...

New comment by marzetti in "Ask HN: How do I easily catalog a couple thousand physical books?"

marzetti — Wed, 22 Sep 2021 08:55:11 +0000

'My Library' by Julien Keith, is great for Android users... Over 1m downloads and 4.6 star average... My own library is only about 600 odd books, but it was easy to use, interesting, and great now it's done!
