I'm still in charge of a production system serving around 2,000 small to medium websites from a 2-machine MongoDB cluster. It's been running on MongoDB since around 2010 and we have NEVER had any issues.
I accept that the unacknowledged writes was a bad decision, but IMHO if you deploy a new database without reading the documentation, you have bigger issues.
The reality is that there are some places where speed of movement is important and referential integrity is just not that big a deal. We're not all building banking systems.

Great read, thanks for posting.
To me, one thing that's not being discussed much is that Europeans only settled in New Zealand around 200 years ago, pretty short in the history of humanity. You could ask the Maori people how they feel about Europeans showing up and taking their land and destroying their culture, yet they are not gunning us down in cold blood.

If you are interested in learning /music/ and not just learning the /guitar/, I would strongly encourage you to start on the piano.
I started on the piano and moved to the guitar later, and I've now realised that the piano gives you such a good musical grounding, so much better than the guitar can. There's nothing quite like having it all laid out in front of you. It's the only way that things like sharps and flats make sense, it doesn't make much sense on a guitar and that makes musical theory difficult to learn.

I'm from New Zealand and I'm currently living in Thailand volunteering for an anti human trafficking organisation, rescuing children from the sex trade.
I was thrown in the deep end and had to quickly become a Salesforce administrator and developer, I'm now running two Salesforce orgs, as well as all the other stuff we have going on.
I've found it an amazing exercise -- I've grown in patience, understanding of other people, time management, etc... as well as all the new technical skills I've learned.
I was amazed at how doable it is as well. My wife and I have two young girls (5 and 3), and although we were hugely daunted to begin with, we've coped pretty well. As long as you (the reader) have some ability to roll with the punches, I'd give it a go, you'll probably surprise yourself.

To me, the problem is that all this kid really did is hike up the bid price of competitive keywords, therefore earning more money for Google. I have the same issue with them giving away money for trials, or giving thousands to non-profits.
It's gaming their own system from within -- if someone is given money to splurge on Adwords, they will pour it into really competitive keywords without really caring about the return, jacking up the price for those who are paying real money.
It might sound altruistic, but there is a pretty real benefit for Google.
