Since the McDonalds app was downloaded between 10 to 50 million times, its suddenly "the basic way 100 of millions order their food?”?
Where are the extra 50+ million users you claim coming from? Am I to believe McDonalds has a 100% retention rate after app installation?

Have you run into any rate limiting on iMessage? We usually see bulk messaging (eg: appointment reminders) getting silently dropped by carriers if over 100 messages are sent from that number in a day.
Additionally, what stops Apple from breaking your service, like so many other unofficial chat APIs?

Those same DSL techs often know exactly what needs to be done to save the telecom company they work for, deploy GPON.
Verizon broke new ground and did it in the early 2000s, and its the only reason they still have as many customers as they do. The assets they sold to Frontier were partially upgraded, and have taken a beating due to Frontier's internal incompetence and poor service. Reactivating service to an existing ONT should not take more than a few minutes, yet it takes 24+hrs with Frontier.
The cable companies are willing to do what is neccesary to get customers up and running, which is how they have hollowed out the incumbent telecom's business.

This kind of "free market" for electricity tends to drive up infrastructure costs needlessly (see Australia), while incentivizing bad behaviour by generation suppliers in the market (see Enron).
Public utilities generally provide a higher caliber of service at a lower price, with less administrative bloat.

If anything, P2P high bandwidth connections are often more reliable as your traffic likely stays on your ISPs network rather than needlessly hairpinning through a central server outside their network.
Hence why VoIP like WebRTC encourages direct media rather than wasting a trip to a server, the server's peering can often be much worse than a path between two users on residential ISPs.
