<p>It is still independent in sense that it doesn't depend on Google Search money and Chrome/Firefox code as most of the alternative browsers. Depending on your definition of dependency, it will always going to be dependent on something.<p>Also they are not changing the licence or preventing forks.<p>It is a pragmatic solution to a real problem that can really clog down progress on the project. I hope they (and other open source projects) will figure out how to filter in good, responsible contributors but I guess it will take time.</p>

Started using it because of one time payment and Dropbox sync. They switch to subscription model but I still find it quite usable.</p>

<p>I don't use Sublime Text as an IDE (I have Intellij for that), mainly to edit scripts, large CSV files, as a scratchpad etc. but It's always open and increases my productivity a lot.</p>

<p>Take a look at Enpass (<a href="https://www.enpass.io" rel="nofollow">https://www.enpass.io</a>) it has a free desktop app and one off fee for mobile apps. I've been using it for tree or four months and it's been great.</p>
