reductio ad absurdum is what I think you are referring to.
But again, that’s not what this is. Taking away all cell phones, which are a lot more useful than the camera function it shares with flock, is not an equivalent move.
The issue is people don’t want their town covered in cameras they don’t control and has been shown to be abused nationwide. How on earth is removing internet access to the populace even in the same ballpark?
This is a tantrum by someone who I suspect was set to gain financially by signing a contract with flock.

My experience with Google Maps is very different. We got burned so many times going to a closed restaurant that was open according to Google that we just use the listing to find the phone number now, and we call ahead
I know it’s probably not Google’s fault. The owner needs to update their listing, but it’s just one more little thing adding up over the years to make me avoid Google altogether

To be fair, the council member appears to be an idiot.
If not, he is leaning all the way into a false equivalence comparing a cell phone one has personal control over to a nationwide network of spy cams that no regular citizen controls.
So which is it? Idiot or bad faith actor?

It’s odd to frame it like this. How about:
A powerful enough LLM trained on great books can output something indistinguishable to most people as a great book. Would you read it? Appreciate it?
Sure I’d read it. At least some of it. If I knew it was AI I don’t think I’d need to finish it because I know it’s not actually an influential work that has a place in literary history.
If I didn’t know it was AI, I’d probably read the whole thing and have funny opinions of it because by definition I probably couldn’t tell the difference.
We are all here on the internet reading comments by bots to pass the time. It’s been that way for a long time and we all still enjoy doing it. The “quality” of what we are reading is going up but what else really changes?

Yep
All cars are “all wheel stop”
All wheel drive doesn’t matter when you lose traction and need to stop. When you are sliding on ice all cars perform the same, and the quality of your tires is what matters. AWD just gives people false confidence to drive faster than they can stop.
I convinced my wife to stop buying the absolute cheapest tires by telling her it is literally the only part of the car that actually touches the road. Why would you cheap out on that?

I don’t know how the slate is designed but I have a rivian
The battery pack is by far heavier than the motors. In the r1 they are also positioned with the wheels (quad) or front/back (dual) so weight distribution is great.
If the slate has a single motor and is RWD then I would assume the weight might be biased toward the rear where the drive unit is powering the rear wheels. Either way the motor is relatively small compared to ICE trucks and that’s where you want the weight anyway for a RWD vehicle.
Am I mistaken?

It is a vanity project helmed by a terminally online manchild who wanted cyberpunk blade runner vibes.
Go look back at the original concept art. The actual delivered vehicle dimensions are totally different, so he didn’t even succeed at that part. They couldn’t build what he wanted. It’s way more boxy and looks like shit on the road.
And lol at 173 total affected vehicles. What a failure.

Meshtastic doesn’t seem to work well in dense environments. It is known.
In the PNW there are two very successful meshcore meshes, cascadimesh and psmesh. The former stretches all the way from Oregon to BC and the latter focuses more on the sound.
I just switched over to the mesh core version of psmesh and instantly I was able to get chats from folk across the state. With the Meshtastic version I couldn’t see my friends nodes once we left the pub. And I never got a ping back from my tracker the next town over despite futzing with the channel settings for a couple days

Put it another way; the blast radius from any vulnerability is much smaller.
But also, the cost is much, much higher to the institutions, which is the salient point. You're going to spend years developing a system, deploying it, training staff and students, supporting it. I see mentions here of in-house systems being developed much more cheaply and I don't believe it. The economies of scale are at work.
I worked at a university for many years and I can't recall anyone I'd consider to be a competent software architect working for the IT department. Hell, we had students writing major webapps that kinda sorta worked well enough.

My daughter is in 3rd grade and has to do assignments online.
Last month it was a presentation. She had to make a poster that would be displayed on the big electronic "whiteboard" running Windows of some sort. The page layout software was so terrible that she repeatedly deleted the entire thing on accident moving text around.
This month, it was a short paper she had to write in Word, but through Teams. Literally, the Word icon is in the Teams sidebar, and she also had all kinds of trouble with it freezing or misbehaving.
In both cases, I advised her to write all the content in Notes in macOS and when she had it all ready to go we'd paste it into the crappy software so she didn't have to worry about losing any more work.
Long story short, she's non-technical and she's learned a very valuable lesson about these systems and how much trust to place in them.

I started my tech career in EDU. I’m not at all surprised.
IT staff who are ambitious and talented don’t last long in education. The pay is very low compared to industry. Where I worked, you could retire with a comfortable pension after a number of service years, so the IT staff outsourced as much as possible so they needed to take zero risks to their nest egg. Blame all the problems on the consultants and do as little as possible.
It’s literally where dreams go to die.
MIT is known for the brilliant professors and students but at the end of the day, running a university is pretty standard stuff. They don’t need a genius rockstar to admin the courseware servers.

> Good artists get paid plenty.
Absolutely false. You don’t even have to try hard to find scores of examples of great artists who died penniless. Artists who lived in squalor for decades until they broke through, and even then made only a modest living.
0.001% of which get “paid plenty” and that’s more due to business acumen.
Creative fields are cutthroat, brutal and soul crushing.
LLMs have proven that most people don’t care or can’t tell the difference between human expression and a probabilistic approximation of it.
On the other hand, this article is about a sports bar logo. Only in Santa Cruz would you see people lose their shit over something so trivial. Are we supposed to be moved to tears by the human expression of a cartoon otter on a tacky surfboard?

My watch doesn’t have an eSIM at all.
Rivian is an adventure brand so if they wanted to design a maps system like that, where I am not continually downloading tiles from open maps or google and sending my location to them and others, they probably could
I just don’t think they have space for those types of features most people don’t care about while they are trying to compete in a rough industry and deliver new vehicles
