Thing is it hasn't moved as much as you think. People have moved from poverty to lower middle class not actually middle class. If consider middle class as between 20k to 40k a month and lower middle class at 10k to 20k a month and below 10k as poor then most poor people have only moved to lower middle class only.

>It probably pleases the people who were paying you, because now they don't have to subsidise the people who aren't.
Bullshit. It's unclear communication and indecisiveness that pisses people off. If you can't afford it, there is no reason for you to give something for free and then later take it away. People who are paying will feel that samething will happen to them in other ways. You want consistency.

Even that can achieved by changing the time you do things. Like schools can be 1 hour early at a particular time of the year instead of changing time for everybody else.
Honestly I can't think of a single legitimate reason why you would want to hang onto daylight saving time.

One thing I can suggest is to switch to business news instead. Business news is more inclined to give all the facts rather than give an opinion on things. Also looking at things from a business perspective is usually much more neutral and you learn a lot more. Regardless of this you shouldn't be consuming news on TV anyway.
This article isn't new though. Similar articles have been posted in HN since 2010s.

Maybe an unpopular opinion here but I am finding HN to be more and more like Reddit everyday. I normally only read HN articles that have atleast 500 points or more and have notifications setup for it. In the past I used to get only 1 or 2 notifications a week. Now I get atleast 4 a day. I find it hard nowadays to keep up.

>It will take forever to build up a similar ecosystem in Europe and I think most successful European entrepreneurs will just end up starting companies in the US instead.
This is what you are wrong about. It would be true if you were from a small country like Sri Lanka or similar but for EU many European companies will smell an opportunity to fill the void.

This is a contentious point especially for software engineering jobs as the salary is supposed to be based on performance as there is no obvious benefit to being in the same geographic location.
This is happening now too, as many high paying jobs are coming on India and other parts of the world through remote work. Eventually I believe your cost of living will have no impact on the salary you get.

>I'd frequently tell my co-workers, "If you're not paying for it, you're the product." That experience underscored that notion for me.
But this isn't true for all of us, google provides support through paid programs and sells services to other businesses. This is more of google specific problem.
